A Logan City school has linked with the Small Steps For Hannah Foundation in a community partnership to highlight warning signs around domestic violence to its students.
Mabel Park SHS has had the foundation’s emblem and key wording emblazoned on its Titans Cup senior girls rugby league shorts.
Mabel Park SHS principal Michael Hornby said the association with the foundation sent a message to his students about domestic violence awareness.
The foundation was established after Hannah Clarke and her three children, Aaliyah, 6, Laianah, 4, and Trey, 3, lost their lives as a result of domestic violence in 2020.
It aims to promote the prevention or control of domestic violence and “relieve the distress of those directly and indirectly affected by such violence’’.
“It (domestic violence) is such a big issue in our society as a whole and Logan is a part of that,’’ Hornby said.
“Sue and Lloyd, they are beautiful people and to get them to visit the school and connect with the girls rugby league program, it is a really special connection.
“We educate our students about domestic violence and (the Small Steps for Hannah message) being on the girls’ shorts, it is a true connection.
“That, coupled with meeting Sue and Lloyd, the girls can see the message and are educated to identify the risk factors around this critical time of being a teenager at school.
“And now the foundation is part of them as a team, and part of us as a school, and the girls represent that (the foundation) every time they run onto the field.
Mr Clarke said he and his wife were honoured to be associated with the Mabel Park SHS community.
“When Mabel Park High School reached out to Small Steps 4 Hannah requesting permission to use our logo on the girls rugby league shorts, as they choose a charity each year to support, we were thrilled that they chose SS4H as there charity,’’ he said.
“We are looking forward to this unique opportunity to work with them to bring awareness to HALT domestic and Family Violence.’’
He said HALT stood for Hannah, Aaliyah, Laianah and Trey.
