Watch for Kurt Siwek (Churchie), Lachlan Curtin (Brisbane Grammar), Ben Tweedy (The Southport School), and Kailen Sales (Brisbane State High) to make an impact in this year's GPS basketball competition.

The Southport School are a good chance to challenge for the GPS First V premiership this season, but the competition is shaping up to be the tightest in years.

After TSS, Brisbane State High, and Toowoomba Grammar shared last year’s premiership, a bumper season looms.

The www.couriermail.com.au will be covering the action – look out for a story on Sunday.

GPS BASKETBALL PLAYERS OF THE YEAR 2022

GPS BASKETBALL PREMIERSHIP 2022

The reason TSS can go back-to-back is because they have Anthony Peach as coach and their core back again after last year’s success.

The slashing Jaylen Pitman, the bucket getting Ben Tweedy, the hot hand of Jack Foley and the two-way wizardry of Indy Cotton, who is in Year 10, will provide a cocktail for success.

And of course they have Nikos Karathanosopolous and Jackson McCabe down low.

Tweedy will be a handful for opposition defenders, and right man Pitman, an athlete, will also be hard to contain.

They will have to get past the Jason Ralph coached Ipswich team who have Justin Ventic, Mikel Tokiyawa, James Casaquite and Harrison McAuliffe ready to rock.

But, if last year is anything to go off – the premiership is up for grabs.

Brisbane Grammar will have rebound king Lachlan Curtin leading them into the fray, and there is no one more suited to the job.

He has passion, game, and a knack for getting offensive rebounds. Helping him with scoring will be the shifty Lebron Brooks – A player who can really get it going.

Facilitating, while doing a bit of everything for his team will be the crafty Max Balthes, the perfect point guard.

Watch for other Brisbane Grammar boys to step up.

In round 1 Brisbane Grammar face BBC, a team capable of causing a ripple in the competition.

Shooting guard Daniel Graham showed out as a Year 10 last season and will be confident leading into this year. He can shoot the lights out.

Emerson Juhasz is sure to bob up, as is Year 10 Charlie Winks, the captain of Queensland South’s Under 16s team at the recent Nationals.

Terrace coach Matthew Hamilton-Smith has at his disposal the Trego twins, Hunter and Phoenix, as well as big man Paul Papacostas.

That is a good team with energy sure to come from Jacob Shaw – a bench player last year ready for a more prominent role in 2023.

The three-point shooting Papacostas will have his hands full in round 1 when he confronts Towoomba’s Samuel Geu – one of the players of the year last season.

Geu, a tall, athletic centre, should feel invincible in his second year of First V hoops. Alongside him, watch for Tawana Ngorima and James Nugent to make an impact.

Expect a top four finish.

And at Churchie, the home side face a new-look Brisbane State High outfit.

They no longer have Mason Amos, Jimmy Ellis, Elijah Kamu and other stars of 2022.

Kailan Sales is back however, a terrific player. Selfless on the court, Sailes will get to his spots and finish.

CJ Amos, the younger brother of Mason, is also a walking bucket.

Churchie are brimming with talent.

Caleb Cronn, McKenzie Jolly, Ed Storen, Jensen Tafe and Kurt Siwek are returning from last year. Add in Jake Miles-Wrency who is back from injury looking to make a dint, and new impact player Oskar Olechnowicz, who has a wealth of representative basketball experience.

They are serious players.

Kurt Siwek.
