ST PETERS Lutheran College swimmer Ariarne Titmus has been crowned the Quest Community Newspapers Individual Sports Star.
At a gala presentation tonight at the Queensland Cricketer’s Club, the Commonwealth Games golden girl beat a hot field to follow in the footsteps of last year’s winner, Australian sprinter Riley Day.
The Sporting Spirit award winner was Nudgee College student Harry Takis.
The world class field of sporting contenders included the junior world decathlon champion Ashley Moloney, six Youth Olympians including silver medallists Oscar Miers and Joshua Cowley, world junior rower silver medallist Laura Chancellor and finalist Phoebe Robinson and brilliant Logan netball prospect Hannah Le Sage.
Titmus said she was honoured to win the award from such an impressive field of candidates.
“When I found out I was nominated for this award and I saw who the other nominees were I was blown away by the depth of young sporting talent we have coming through in Brisbane,’’ Titmus said.
“I know in swimming that most of our younger stars coming through are based in the area, but I was unaware of other young sports stars doing such amazing things from Brisbane, Logan and surrounds too. It is really exciting.’’
Titmus wooed voters on the strength of brilliant performances at both the Commonwealth Games (three gold medals, one silver) and the Pan Pacs (two individual silvers).
At the Pan Pacs, competing against US great Katie Ledecky, Titmus became only the third woman in history to break the four min mark for the 400m, pushing gold medallist Ledecky all the way with a time of 3:59.66.
The St Peters Western Swim Club star said although she was currently training for the World Short Course Championships in December, she had allowed herself time for a brief reflection on her 2017 achievements.
“Although my season is still going and I need to stay focused, I have reflected a little on the crazy year I have had,’’ Titmus said.
“The Comm Games was such an unreal experience and winning gold in front of a home crowd will be a memory that I am sure will stick with me for a long time.
“After Gold Coast, I competed in Tokyo at the Pan Pacific Championships.
“This meet was tougher competition as I was racing the world record holder in my events.
“I raced even better at Pan Pacs, and I am still coming to terms with the fact I am only the third woman ever to break the four minute barrier in the 400 freestyle.
“I think because things have moved so fast this year, it will take me a bit longer to just chill for a tad and reflect on my performance there which was the highlight of my year.
“Ducking under four minutes felt like a weight was lifted off not just mine but my coach’s (Dean Boxall) shoulders.
“It was kind of like “right that’s done, now onto the next thing”.
Titmus thanked her family, coach and sponsors Nike and Speedo “for their ongoing support’’.
“It is an honour to win this award following the year I have had in the pool.
“This year has been such a whirlwind for me and it feels like I am on the right track going forward with Tokyo just under two years away.
