THE individual disappointment continued for Cate Campbell on the final day in the pool, but her Games campaign has finished on a high with relay success.

THE individual disappointment continued for Cate Campbell on the final day in the pool in Rio, but the Commercial Swim Club star has finished her Games campaign on a high with relay silver.

The gold medal favourite in the 50m and 100m freestyle before heading to Rio, Campbell (24.15) again missed the podium with a fifth-placed finish in Sunday morning’s 50m event as Denmark’s Pernille Blume (24.07) took gold.

Sister Bronte (24.42) was also below her best, finishing seventh.

However, relay success was to come for Cate, who produced her best swim of the week to help the 4x100m medley relay team finish second to the US (3:53.13).

Swimming the final leg behind fellow Queenslanders Emily Seebohm, Taylor McKeown and Emma McKeon, Cate, 24, entered the water in fifth place before storming home to touch the wall at 3:55.00.

It capped a tumultuous week for the Campbell sisters, who tasted victory on the opening night in the 4x100m freestyle relay, but left empty-handed in the individual events they were expected to dominate.

“I knew I was going to be diving in a bit behind (in the relay but) I didn’t panic and I’ve got to be proud of that, if not for the rest of the week,” Cate, a product of Indooroopilly Swim Club, said.

“It wasn’t my best performance (in the 50m final) but it’s fair to say this week hasn’t been my best. The world got to witness possibly the greatest choke in swimming history the other night (in the 100m final).

“It hurts but maybe I’ll stick around for another four years. (Thank you to) the whole extended Australian family out there who’s been supporting us.”

The relay medal gave former St John Fisher College student Seebohm reason to smile after the gold-medal favourite crashed out of the 100m and 200m backstroke events earlier in the week.

“It’s really good (to win a medal). It obviously hasn’t been my best (week). It’s a little bit disappointing and I know how much I wanted it and how I much I trained for it, but it’s something I’ve got to live with,” the 24-year-old said.

McKeown, from Bellmere, was more positive after missing a medal in the 200m breaststroke.

“That relay was a lot of fun and we really wanted to end the night on appositive note. To finish the games on the podium is something I can take away,” the Redcliffe-born 21-year-old said.

St Peters Western Swim Club’s Mitch Larkin helped continue Australia’s strong relay form, swimming the backstroke leg in the men’s 4x100m medley team that claimed bronze.

The US (3:27.95) again dominated, but the Australians (3:29.93), featuring Jake Packard, David Morgan and Kyle Chalmers, came home strongly to finish behind Great Britain.

“Going out there tonight I had a team I could trust,” Larkin said.

“Obviously that US team is pretty amazing. It’s really tough to beat a team like that.

“I didn’t quite get the team off to the start I wanted but I knew I had these guys behind me. It’s pretty amazing.”
