QLD Reds v NSW Waratahs Under 18s Academy game report

Queensland Reds v New South Wales Waratahs: Our Super Seven players of the under 18s Academy hit out at Ballymore Stadium along with 60 pictures and how New South Wales claimed a comprehensive victory over their interstate rivals.

The New South Wales Waratahs spoiled the party with a compelling 38-7 victory in today’s under 18s Academy match against home side Queensland at Ballymore Stadium’s new National Rugby Training Centre.

With St Augustine’s College fly half Joe Walsh with his hand on the trigger, the Sky Blues’ produced a four try first half performance which laid a deposit for victory.

MEET ALL 38 QUEENSLAND UNDER 18S SELECTS

Leading 24-0 at halftime, and then 31-0 shortly after the break, New South Wales looked set to win in a canter.

Queensland scored one try through Churchie schoolboy Alex Kerr but it was one way traffic at the inaugural games at the newly developed Ballymore Stadium.

King’s School battering ram shines

Strongly built inside centre Boston Fakafanua from the King’s School, was bruising with his ball carrying.

Not dissimilar to the popular Brad Fitler bump-off try of last years under 16 National Championships, New South Wales’ Fakafanua left daring defenders in his wake when charging forward with the ball. His second try of the day showed his power.

SUPER SEVEN:

Aden Ekanayake (New South Wales)

A great first half from the visitors was topped off with an early try to begin the second. Strong plays in the lead up by lock Aden Ekanayake of Gordon Rugby club and Boston Fakafanua saw halfback Hwi Sharples score. Ekanayake was tremendous all game, his mobility at the lock position giving his team a boost.

Alex Kerr (Queensland)

The 194cm backrower Alex Kerr had himself a strong game. He matched the New South Wales forward onslaught and looked a good prospect for Churchie. He had a big motor, and was a great lineout target for Ewald Kruger.

Boston Fakafanua (New South Wales)

Queensland had their backs up against the wall and making matters worse was this bloke, an inside centre from The King’s School.

A junior at the Hills Junior Rugby Club, Fakafanua relished ball in hand and when in space, he was a freight train with speed, power, a step and an offload.

Dre Pakeho (Queensland)

Not unlike Fakafanua, Pakeho put his best foot forward in the No. 12 jersey.

A Churchie old boy and Brothers colts 1 playmaker, last year’s discovery player was impressive in an underwhelming showing from the home side.

When he came back on after an early yellow card he won a turnover at the breakdown.

Vaiuta Latu (Queensland)

Latu was a breakaway marathon man, maintaining the rage across the entire 70 minutes with his barrelling runs, energy in defence, and breakdown presence.

Did everything asked of him.

Brendan Palmer and Liam Grover (New South Wales)

The fast finishing wingers Palmer and Grover were a handful for the Queensland edge defenders. They had sharp footwork, good instincts and together they added fifteen points to the scoreboard.

THE TRIES

+ After Queensland lost centre Dre Pakeho to the bin early, New South Wales winger Brendan Palmer was the beneficiary with the first try.

+ A double cut out pass from St Augustine’s College fly half Joe Walsh found Palmer for his second try in the first 10 minutes.

+ After a bone rattling hit from centre Dre Pakeho, the Waratahs returned serve through The King’s School inside centre Boston Fakafanua who extended his side’s lead at 17-0 in the 32nd minute with a 65m intercept try.

+ Approaching halftime, a box-kick chase and regather from winger Liam Grover saw New South Wales go into the break 24-0 up. It was a lethal box-kick from St Joseph’s College halfback Hwi Sharples which deflated the Reds side.

+Immediately off the kick-off New South Wales halfback Hwi Sharples crossed thanks to his support play. Towering lock vice-captain Aden Ekanayake made it possible with a great aerial leap to catch the ball.

+ An Alex Kerr pick and drive try to draw Queensland within 24.

+ In the 59th minute, a strong run by outside centre Malayke Enasio of St Ignatius College, Riverview got New South Wales over the advantage line before Ekanayake and Grover combined to put battering ram Fakafanua over.
