A star was born as an extraordinary 17 records tumbled at the prestigious QGSSSA (Queensland Girls Secondary Schools Sports Association) track and field championship won by Moreton Bay College today at QSAC.
For the seventh successive year MBC claimed the Stephens Cup in an exciting Cup race that came down to the relays.
The final places were: Moreton Bay College 974.50, St Peters Lutheran College 900, BSHS 876, St Aidan’s 842.50, St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School 725.50, Brisbane Grammar School (724), Somerville House (545), Ipswich Girls Grammar School (536), St Hilda’s (460) and Clayfield College (292.50).
But there were also an array of individual, record breaking feats.
It all started with sprinter Zara Hagan (St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School) and Australia’s No.1 hurdler in her age group, Leilani Hill (BSHS).
Hagan’s personal best time of 11.81 secs in the 100m 15 years surpassed the previous best effort by the country’s No.1 under 20 female sprinter, Torrie Lewis (St Peters Lutheran College, 11.90 secs).
Lewis, now a Year 12 student and World Junior Championship selection, was unavailable to compete today due to injury and in her absence Hagan pushed her past her own previous best time of 11.89 seconds.
Brisbane State High School student Hill claimed the first QG record of the day - a roaring 13.96 second effort in the under 17+ hurdles.
Hills beat a hot field - Tayden Tomich (St Peters) and Alessandria-Jayd Tucker (BGGS), to finish first.
In the field, St Peters Brogan Tomich won her Div B 16 years long jump with a record breaking performance, 5.39m which was well past her previous best effort of 5.23m while shot put young gun Saskia Josipovic (BSHS) delivered her school a 14 years QGSSSA record - twice. Josipovic later won the discus in record time.
And it also rained records across the 100m 12 years sprints with Tiana Keke (Div A, St Aidan’s, 12.87), Jessica Austin (Div B, BSHS, 13.59) and Sybil Piutau (Div C, BSHS, 13.63) winning in record times.
More records fell in shot put during afternoon competition, with St Peters Allira Takau (15.25m, 15 years Div A) and Hayley Condon (St Peters, 15 years Div B shot put) passing old QGSSSA marks.
The records kept coming, with elite St Peters athlete Jazelle Carter storming to victory in her Div B 100m race, and then BSHS’s Grace Kuilamu also finding the winners’ post in a record 12.71 seconds.
Then in the under 12 200m race, Tiana Keke rose to the occasion for a crack St Aidan’s track team to win in a new QGSSSA record.
And to polish off the individual events ahead of the relays, Jemma Wilson (Somerville House) broke the 800m 15 years Div B record while Gabrielle Schmidt (St Peters) claimed the Div B 16 years record.
And late in the schedule, St Peters high class athlete Gabrielle found a record winning effort in the 16 years Div B 800m. It was that type of meet.
Then, to cap it all off, St Peters stormed to a relay medal - the 17th record breaking feat of the day.
Ella-Jay Harrison-Leaunoa, Lucie Basset-Rouge, Brogan Tomich and Zoe Chester combined for the win by Saints.
History was then made just after 11am when Phoebe Finlay (St Aidan’s), Holly Warn (St Hilda’s), Charisse Sham (Clayfield) and Abby Craswell (MBC) lined up in QGSSSA’s first 100m multi class athletic event.
There was more excitement in the explosive 100m events which featured double trouble - winning runs from St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School sisters - as Amelie Boyd (Div B) and Aurelia Boyd (Div A) surged to victories in their respective 13 years 100m dashes.
And to top it all off, Zara Hagan’s sister, Rhani, won her 100m event.

St Peters Keira McGregor then broke up the Hagan domination, beating Zara’s sister Rhani in her 16 years 200m event while BSHS’s Leilani Hills powered to victory in the 17 years.
Hills, from BSHS, won her race, but in her vision would have been St Aidan’s Geema Casaceli whose game run pushed the champ to the line.
