QGSSSA netball blockbuster; round 5 report

A showcase QGSSSA round 5 netball clash highlighting a round which saw several teams remain in premiership contention.

Brisbane State High School and Moreton Bay College Open played a QGSSSA open netball classic at the weekend, leading to a remarkable 49-all.

There was never more than two points in the clash highlighted by the match-up between Kydan Tuapou of BSHS and Sophia Dobson of MBC.

Queensland representative player Dobson showed great leadership in defence while and the experience of young gun Tuapou shone through.

Despite the high-pressure situation Tuapou stayed cool and consistently stood up to slow the ball down.

As a natural goal attack, she executed this with precision and intensity.

Tuapou knew her match-up with versatile defender Dobson wasn’t going to be an easy task, and she worked hard to keep it simple and keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Losehina Mulligan of BSHS was outstanding in goal defence. Her strength and commitment to that first ball pressure could not be faulted.

BSHS also had Madison Waugh firing on all cylinders. One of the youngest in the team, Waugh starts each game in centre and has been a consistent threat to her competition all season.

Waugh’s tenacity in attack and her sheer doggedness proved lethal towards the back of the game, a force to be reckoned with.

These two talented teams sit at the top of the Opens ladder, along with St Peters who are still in the mix.

Meanwhile in last Saturday’s games, MBC played Clayfield College, with MBC’s Senior B defenders Abbey Johnson and Rachel Kennish leading the way with some amazing textbook turn overs, resulting in a 57-7 win.

The 8B teams from Clayfield and MBC played every ball right to the final whistle, all players showing true fighting spirit resulting in the game of the day and bringing home a draw for these sides.

The MBC Senior A and 10C teams won their respective matches and continue to build for the back half of the season.

Despite some great ball movement in attack, the MBC 7Cs and 8Bs narrowly lost their matches, with the Clayfield teams shining on the day.

St Margaret’s played BSHS with a competitive Opens game, a tough start with the lead changing throughout the game.

BSHS found some momentum and pulled away to win 44 to 30.

It was the BSHS mid courters again with the standout performances with Madi Waugh, making it look easy and heavily involved in all full court transitions.

The Senior A game was a great contest with BSHS taking the win by 16 goals. The BSHS mid-courters of Florence Brown, Grace Tregidgo and Eva Wilde created great space and options down the court, linking the defensive turn overs to the star shooting circle.

Senior B and Senior C games saw St Margaret’s come out on top, indicating great depth in the senior netball ranks to win against powerhouse BSHS, they will be teams to watch in the future.

St Margaret’s 7A’s continue with their undefeated season coming away with a hard-fought 40 to 35 win.

St Hilda’s played Brisbane Girls Grammar where the Opens game saw both teams play a strong and physical game in the wet, slippery conditions.

BGGS started well, with high shooting accuracy giving them a lead going into half time. St Hilda’s then made some positional changes, which enabled them to bring the score back to even at the final break.

With heavier rain in the last quarter, it was goal for goal, with both teams putting in huge defensive efforts to prevent the other team from scoring easily, culminating in a 20-all draw.

A great game for players, coaches, and spectators to be a part of.

St Peters v Somerville House was cancelled due to the forecast of rain and at 7.20am the heavens opened, proving the decision to be a good one.
