QGSSSA latest: Four sport wrap up including leading players from round 4.

The QGSSSA winter fixture season is in full swing, reaching the halfway mark. We run our eyes over several of the open ladders while also reviewing round 4 action from the weekend.

Unbeaten St Hilda’s School was looking exceptionally strong in tennis and the Gold Coast girls will be looking to cement their pathway to a premiership pennant via Dayna Whitely-Hall, Lindsay Engelen, Sarah Bigg and Elise Virr.

Elise Virr is playing open tennis as a 12-year-old, and is ranked in the top 10 nationally for her age group.

St Hilda’s Director of Tennis, Nick Hughes, said Elise loved her tennis and had been playing since aged four.

The young gun aspires to play professional tennis in the future and this pathway, along with St Hilda’s excellent tennis program and facilities, were supporting her.

“St Hilda’s tennis players have the opportunity to play all year round, and it is paying dividends with strong participation and results across all divisions,’’ Hughes said.

Open volleyball is still hotly contested with Brisbane State High, St Peters Lutheran College, Moreton Bay College, Brisbane Girls Grammar and St Hilda’s all sitting on equal points.

This Saturday’s is crucial in directing the destiny of some teams.

The St Peters open girls, coached by Boris Georgieff and Matt Young, played in the senior Schools Cup tournament last weekend to further finesse their game.

The team was undefeated across six matches, and did not concede one set in coming away with the gold medal. Most

The Most Valuable Player of the tournament went to Maisie Peebles, with the St Peters success in an open schools tournament like that highlighting the strength of the QGSSSA competition.

St Peters were sitting firmly at the top of the open hockey ladder, closely followed by St Margaret’s, a team that has been exceptionally strong this season with three wins and one draw.

The draw came against an impressive Somerville House team last weekend.

Brisbane State High School and Moreton Bay College hockey teams are also in pennant contention after some spectacular undefeated games.

On Tuesday afternoon these two teams will face-off on turf at the State Hockey Centre for their Round 4 match-up which will ultimately be a season decider.

Netball continues to be a crowd pleaser, with the competition gaining momentum.

Brisbane State High, Moreton Bay College, St Peters and St Margaret’s are all sitting atop the table at this point, although this will change on Thursday when Brisbane State High and Moreton Bay College clash.

Also in round 4 netball, St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School had a tidy, clean sweep against St Hilda’s, winning all eight matches.

IN PICTURES - THE QGSSSA CROSS COUNTRY

The St Aidan’s open team is a young group of players progressing well, securing their first win of the season.

Outstanding performances were from goal defence Alex Jolly, a Year 10 student who has risen to the challenge of playing in the top division and created plenty of turnovers, and goal shooter Vienna Tran who had her best game of the season shooting with incredible accuracy.

St Peters and Brisbane Girls Grammar rescheduled the 8A, 9A & the Open game to last Tuesday due to the Vicki Wilson Final Series weekend and travelled to Downey Park where St Peters won all three games.

The remainder of the games were played on Saturday where the BGGS staff worked tirelessly to get the courts at the University of Queensland ready after overnight rain.

St Peters won 10 from the 16 games, with BSHS displaying fighting spirit and forcing three of the games to be decided by a one-point differential - all won by St Peters.

Somerville House versus St Margaret’s had some thrillers, with the open game going goal-for-goal in anyone’s match.

St Margaret’s had a close two goal win to end the game at 34 to 32.

The senior A Somerville Team was too strong and played some sensational netball for the win, and the Somerville 10A’s also had a convincing 39-27 win with strong performances from the shooters.

Meanwhile, the St Margaret’s 7A’s battled hard to keep an undefeated season alive.

Brisbane State High School played Moreton Bay College, and while the Opens competed in the Vicki Wilson Cup, both the Senior A and B teams lead the way for MBC.

There was an outstanding performance in defence by Charlotte Craig, setting up a fantastic win for the senior A side.

The Senior B team built the result quarter by quarter, with an amazing “team effort” that brought the win home.

Both the 10B and 10C MBC teams had fantastic first quarters and did not look back, each winning their respective matches.

Mid court players, Emma Donaldson and Eve Watson, gave their shooters an exceptional amount of ball supply, which assisted their team to victory.

Emma Hunter had an outstanding game, shooting a number of long-range goals to seal the match.

A clean sweep for all three of the MBC year 7 netball teams against strong Brisbane State High teams meant the players had to work hard for the entire 60 minutes.

The girls from the Bay were courageous, with a number of match wining intercepts throughout the game being rewarded by the shooters and showcasing the determination of the QGSSSA’s youngest netball players.

Thursday afternoon rescheduled netball games will take place between BSHS and MBC for the Open, 10A, 9A and 8A teams.

Clayfield College played Ipswich Girls’ Grammar where the Clayfield Senior A team continued their fantastic form with a convincing 41 to 23 win.

The game was fast and furious, with special performances from Clayfield players Jasmine Barnett and Tara Coote in goals and Charli Rose and Ella Wilkins in defence.

The Ipswich Girls’ Grammar Senior B Team continued their winning streak, defeating Clayfield 54 to 6 with some precision shooting.

There was some fantastic play and sportsmanship shown by both sides on and off court and was a great way to welcome newcomer Cameron White to the Clayfield side.

White had an outstanding game as goal keeper, together with Kate Beavis in goal defence.

The IGGS 8B also won by a considerable margin of 31-17. Sophia Bell was a standout for the round, taking the role of shooter.

Round 5 fixtures will be played on Friday and Saturday.
