QGSSSA cross country championship 2022

Here’s 50 of the best athletes who will compete at the QGSSSA cross country championship: The list include Australia’s best junior rower and world junior athletic qualifiers.

Jazelle Carter (St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School)

Two athletes with world junior track and field championship qualifying times and a national rowing champion are among those who will feature at Saturday’s annual QGSSSA cross country championship at Rivermount College.

What a list of competing athletes it is, including returning champions Saffron Jenkinson (BSHS, 13 years), Zoe McElwaine (Brisbane Girls’ Grammar School, 14 yearse), Gabrielle Schmidt (St Peters, 16 years), Jemima Morton (BGGS 15 years) and Isabella Harte (St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School, 17 years).

Harte also has a 3000m world junior qualifying time achieved this year.

And while the QGSSSA cross country is all about participation and winning points for your school team, individually there are some elite athletes in the system.

Among the best multitalented young sporting guns is BSHS’s Sophie Malcolm.

This extraordinary young athlete is Australia’s best young female rowing prospect who was a one woman medal machine at the recent Australian Rowing Championships where she enjoyed success with her sister Jess.

Sophie was crowned:

+ Schoolgirls Single Scull champion for the second year running

+ under 21 Women’s Lightweight Single Scull

+ under 19 Women’s Single Scull

Together, Jess and Sophie Malcolm claimed the:

+ under 21 Women’s Lightweight Double Scull

+ under 21 Women’s Quadruple Scull (Centenary-QAS composite)

+ under 21 Interstate Lightweight Quadruple Scull (QLD)

But there are others. St Hilda’s Holly Warn will compete in multiclass - after earlier this year winning gold at the Australian All Ages Swimming Championships and producing a paralympics qualifying time.

St Margaret’s Matilda Lee is such a distance talent, that when she turned to the steeplechase for the first time at the Australian Athletics Championships, she won the 16 years age group.

Then you have BSHS’s Gwen Watson who was third in the 14-15 years at the inaugural Junior Australian Super Sprint Champions and Georgie Gilroy (BSHS) who, like Harte (St Margaret’s) has a world junior championships qualifying time - but in the 1500m.

Moreton Bay College’s Emma Bible was first at the Australian Athletics championships in the under 18 800m and St Hilda’s Harriett Irving was a member of the South Coast Triathlon team.

Isla Hawkins is also a South Coast Triathlon team selection, along with Alexia Abela (St Hilda’s).

St Aidan’s Phoebe Finlay (multi class, classification: T13) was the 2021 Tennis Queensland Blind/Low Vision Championships junior doubles winner and junior singles bronze medallist.

Distance athleticism continues in the Moore household, with Zara following in the footsteps of her sisters Keira and Nikita who was a world cross country championship representative.

And for the first time the QGSSSA will include an Open Multiclass 3000m event, following on from the historic multiclass being introduced at the QGSSSA swimming championships.

Then there is Charli Spies, a talented runner, swimmer and high-level gymnast, Spies has been a state level runner for a number of years.

In recent times Spies started to concentrate more on triathlon to give her training more variety and help her body recover from running injuries, and this has resulted in her having an excellent start to the Cross Country season, medalling in two out of three.
