Records tumbled at the QGSSSA athletics carnival all day, while there were some blistering sprint performances as Moreton Bay College captured the Stephens Cup for the fifth year in a row.

MBC displayed great depth across the day in both track and field events to claim the title from St Peters Lutheran College, Brisbane State High School and an improved St Aidan’s Anglican Girls School.

The final placings were:

1. MBC 986

2. St Peters 905

4. St Aidan’s 721

5. St Margaret’s

6. BGGS

7. St Hilda’s

10. Clayfield College

Moreton Bay College’s success came early through Estanoa Faitala who secured two field records and late as well when the MBC 17 years 4x100m relay team claimed victory.

In between MBC athletes were consistently among the placings, proving they were indeed the champion school - again.

It was a triumphant day for MBC as a college, but there were eye-catching performances across all schools throughout the day, including from Layalni Va’ai of St Peters Lutheran College.

Va’ai smashed the 17 years shot put record, throwing 14.10m and beating the previous record of 13.72m.

Faitala then claimed a B division 15 years javelin for MBC and later in shot put, while BSHS’s Saskia Josipovic claimed the 12 years shot put in a record.

Then on the track, Georgie Gilroy (14 years, 1500m) ran a record breaking time for Brisbane State High School while another BSHS student, Anika Avers, crashed to a 12 years, 100m Div A record.

Records were sprinkled throughout the day, even as late as the Div B 17 years 800m event where Nyree Hamilton of MBC broke new ground at a QGSSSA event.

Palmers’ effort was followed by school mate Torrie Lewis (15 years) who smashed the record in her age group by .10 with a 11.90sec dash down the track.

It was then a triple treat for St Peters with Hilal Durmaz blitzing the field in the 16 years 100m. Durmaz posted 11.93 seconds, a QGSSSA record in her age group.

St Peters run of 100m success was broken by MBC athlete Lily Neill in the 14 years.

The Palmer, Lewis and Durmaz winning streak continued in the 200m, with all three St Peters sprinters winning their respective 200m events.

Lewis’ time of 24.21 was in record time, the second time she had reached a new mark following her 100m dash.

Earlier, after state cross country champion Isabelle Harte (St Margaret’s) won the 3000m to open the day, the hurdles events were evenly shared around.

Queensland champion Emily Campbell from Brisbane State High School skimmed to a commanding win in the 17 years, while Palmer was equally impressive in the 13 years victory for St Peters.

St Aidan’s Anglican Girls School’s Ella Edwards had a fantastic win in the 16 years which was a blanket finish from Kiara Condon (St Peters) and Francesca Peacock (Moreton Bay College).

Edwards then backed up that performance with a placing in the 16 years 200m alongside the winner Durmaz (St Peters) and Summer-Lee Blake (MBC).

There was nothing in the finish, with Edwards winning with a dip at the line.

It was a grand moment on the track for Edwards, who is also a notable long jumper.

The 12 years 1500m was claimed by Zoe McElwaine (BGGS) from Holly Maree (IGS) and Charli Spies (St Margaret’s).

Trained at BSHS by John Davis and by Lizel Moore at club level, Malcolm’s win was her first at a major event.

Indeed Lizel Moore’s touch was evident across all the 1500m winners, with the 1500 winners at some stage trained by the Sydney 2000 Olympian.

In the 16 years, BSHS’s Keira Moore did not look like she would even blow out a candle, so fit was she in running her 1500m, then big sister Nikita Moore did similar in claiming the 17 years and open 1500m.

One of the really impressive performances of the day came from Keira Moore in the 16 years 800m, a performance called for given the quality of her chasing opponent Bridget McCormack.
