QAFL’s colts, seniors most underrated players

Who are the most underrated QAFL players in the colts and seniors competitions? Here we shine the spotlight on 60 players highly respected within their clubs.

They help make their team tick but are rarely glimpsed in the spotlight. However in this story we give QAFL’s most underrated colts and senior players some public recognition they deserve.

Unsung heroes like Aspley’s Judan Crocker, Redland-Victoria Point’s Tate Houghton, Noosa’s Tom Sparks, Maroochydore’s Brent Pearson and PBC’s Brad Stafford are just five of 60 players we name here.

COLTS

Aspley colts

Judah Crocker: Crocker is a midfield tackling machine who is also well balanced with electric speed.

Daniel Delbridge: The key forward plays his role well each week, is consistent and selfless.

Alex Gould: The backman breaks lines, is adaptable, agile and doesn’t top working for his teammates.

Labrador colts

Dean Robinson: The half back flanker always goes hard at the football and is a renowned defender.

Jett Dickinson: One of the most valuable players in the entire club who, from the back pocket,is a skilful rebounding defender.

Redland-Victoria Point

Stell Scriven: An extremely reliable fullback who has been a consistent contributor all season. He controls the backline. reads the game well and is a fantastic kick.

Tate Houghton: An inside player, the midfielder always displays courage and never backs away from the physical contest. He has a great work rate and is a tackling machine.

Aidan Palfrey: Palfrey is extremely skilful in the air and on the ground around the half back line and midfield. He has a great ability to read play well and can turn defence into attack quickly with his explosive speed.

Alex Pope: At only 15 years, Pope is skilful and displays great athleticism and endurance. The young Sharks’ player has established himself as a prolific ball winner and for a young player he has a mature head on his shoulders. He is an exciting player of the future.

Surfers Paradise colts

Surfers coach Alistair Mitchell said “as a collective’’ his team was “hugely underrated, having played powerhouse Maroochydore twice and only losing by one point and eight points, and only going down to Palm Beach Currumbin by 22 points.

But he nominated the following as particularly underrated.

Jake Secombe: The team’s joint vice-captain, Secombe has shown great leadership and consistency this season while playing on ball and across half back.

Joel O’Brien: The wingman has lightning speed and great endurance which often sees him playing both as an inside and outside player. He is a huge asset to the team.

Jake Selvey: First year colt Jake Selvey has also shone this season and continues to do the hard work extracting the ball from the contest and competing in the air with his strong overhead skills often on show against bigger opponents than him.

Noosa colts

Tom Sparks: A half back, Sparks is a creative strong defender who always puts in.

Jack Mills: The hard running winger has the ability to influence games with his gut running and one-on-one dominance. Mills puts in running both ways.

Broadbeach colts

Mav Well: The wingman-forward is a good reader of play who displays freakish skill on occasions.

Lachlan Edgar: The team’s Mr Fit-it who can play in a number of positions.

Palm Beach Currumbin colts

Bas Macauley: Macauley is little in stature but big hearted playing in the small forward role.

He has the nickname Tip Rat as he is doing all the hard stuff at the moment. His forward pressure is also first class.

Sherwood Magpies

Zack Bidgood: An under 16 age group player, Bidgood is a dynamic forward who lifts his work rate and dominates both in the air and on the ground.

Bill Bougoure: Bougoure is the ultimate team man and leads his team in forward half tackles and pressure acts.

Ryan Marshall: In a highly talented midfield, Marshall does all the hard things like locking down opponents and working extremely hard off the ball to get back and create extra numbers in defence.

Edwin Nyembo: Another under 16 player, the Lions Academy talent from Darwin is lightning fast and hungry for the contest.

Maroochydore

Sonny Ashley: The small forward is very much underrated.

Coby Cook: Surprises with his speed from centre half back.

Hunter James: James has great skills and uses the ball well.

Karter Pinder: Pinder is renowned for great overhead marking power.

Wilston-Grange colts

Carter Simpson

The wing or half forward, Simpson is a first-year player but has impressed with his talent and versatility. He can cover multiple positions and flies under the radar.

Carter Stevens: A young leader from half forward or the mid field, Stevens does a lot of work without the ball in pressuring opponents.

Hunter Easton: A centre half back, Easton has terrific foot skills and plays on the biggest opposition forward each week. He has overcome a lot of injuries in previous season to be the player he is today.

Morningside

Defenders

Tanner Griffiths: Don’t be deceived by his slim features. He has speed and an ability to hit targets.

Jake Edwards: He has terrible body language but has a turn of speed and loves to tackle.

Jy Bruce: A tall defender that has silky skills and can turn on a 50-cent coin.

Matthew Wicks: New to the Panthers but has gained respect by his peers for his tremendous leap.

Charlie Cole: A slim, lanky defender that loves to compete and backs himself in the air.

Taj Moncur: Moncur is fearless and puts his body and head on the line every week.

Morningside midfielders

Zac Melling and Max Taylor: Melling does not  have perfect technique but is highly effective. Taylor is another that doesn’t have perfect technique but is explosive exiting the contest.

Kai Katzman: He comes across as a gentle giant, but don’t get on the wrong side of him. Katzman is an immensely powerful winger for his size.

Dylan Foran and Riley Egan: Foran is a left foot marvel while Egan has immense speed, and a very good footy brain who is a decision maker.

Montey Doorey: The Man Mountain has an elite leap and loves to tackle and inflict pain on the opposition.

Caleb Back: Black is full of class, has silky skills and can-do real damage on his day.

Morningside forwards

Will Cockle: A timid forward, but has great ground ball skills. He loves to mix it with the biggest of them.

Chase Collins: Collins has the potential to be one of the best, featuring all the weapons at his disposal.

Hunter Moulder: Than man with the mullet, Moulder has a magic left foot and can jump over small buildings.

Tom Southern: The ultimate team player, Southern sacrifices himself for the better of the team. He is a future captain in the making.

SENIORS

Broadbeach seniors

Brendon Chadwick: Every team needs a Brendon Chadwick-type and this tough, hard working skilled midfielder is respected by the coaching staff and teammates..

Noosa seniors

Lachie Flagg: Flagg has been the cornerstone of Noosa’s defensive plays despite playing on the opposition’s best forward every week. Flagg is a great competitor and team player.

Surfers Paradise

Jack Taylor: The Surfers fullback is a wonderful player who is very rarely beaten in one-on-one contests. He is a tradesman who just players the fundamentals well.

Sherwood Magpies seniors

Toara Morango: Morango is one of the best defenders in the league, brilliant in the aerial contests as well as on the ground. His toughness is also renowned.

Jack Austin: Austin is an elite young forward with speed and agility. He is also great in the aerial contest.

Josh Coombes: Tough and mobile, the forward also has elite speed and can play ruck as well.

Jack Goodall: Goodall has been a victim of his versatility because he can literally play anywhere. But he is underrated for sure. In his eight years playing at Sherwood, Goodall has played key forward, key back, wing, midfield and ruck - and been extremely effective in all of those positions.

Redland-Victoria Point:

Tom Michael: Michael is a strong ruckman who always delivers great clearances for the side.

Matt Warren: Every team would love a Matt Warren. He is a pressure forward and tackling machine.

Mt Gravatt seniors

Austin Brent: The Vultures senior fullback just does his job every week. He is an old fashioned defender, very competitive and never gives up.

Maroochydore seniors

Brent Pearson: A ruckman or key defender, Pearson is a big hearted competitor who is very difficult to beat.

Zac Stone: The on-baller or half forward, Stone’s hard running is a winner, along with his elite kicking of the footy.

Jordan Daniel: Key back Daniel is super reliable and very good in the air and on the ground.

Jesse Malthouse: Malthouse is an elite endurance athlete and super competitive. The wingman is highly efficient when he transitions the football.

Lukas Kangur: The mid-sized forward has strong hands in the air along with a penetrating kick. He is also accurate on goal.

Palm Beach Currumbin:

Callum McBurnie: McBurnie is a great intercept marker at half back and a fearless player overall.

Brad Stafford: The midfielder or inside player has been honest and reliable since being recruited from South Australia.

Jed Harrison: Utility Harrison shines at either end of the ground and also in the ruck where he always gives 100 per cent.

Aspley

Coen Harker: Harker was recruited from Pine Rivers Division 2 and has only played Australian football for a few years. A big, strong midfielder with a huge capacity to run all day, Harker has played every game in the seniors.

Joe Buderick: The Gorillas’ full back, Buderick rarely gets beaten and is a great lockdown defenders.
