QAFL Team of the Week: Full forward juggernaut earns place

Who made the QAFL team of the week? We name the best 22 players from round 6 of the competition, which includes a full forward juggernaut.

Broadbeach juggernaut Jordan Moncrieff, Surfers Paradise back pocket/halfback flanker Nick Scott and Sherwood fullback Riley Greene were automatic selections in this week’s QAFL Team of the Week.

Each weekend the www.couriermail.com.au, whose company News Corp also publish The Gold Coast Bulletin, will publish a Team of the Week following matches.

Tall forward Moncrieff, with nine goals, continued his amazing performance in the QAFL since arriving at the Gold Coast club at the start of 2020.

Yesterday he was the focal point as possession rained down on him, kicking nine goals in the Cats 18.15-123 to 10.9-69 defeat of Wilston Grange 10.9-69

Scott skirted his way into the team with 36 possession during Surfers’ 15.16-106 to 5.6-36 win over Noosa.

Surfers rookie Sam Hilton-Joyce also got a start as a small forward in the Team of the Week when he piloted home four goals.

Jack Taylor (key defender) was hard to leave out while Tom Smith (half forward flanker) and Matt Doran (midfield) caught the eye of onlookers for Surfers.

Fullback Jayden Young (Labrador) was included on the interchange after almost making the starting 18, but Sherwood fullback Riley Green was so good, even the opposition coach, Maroochydore’s Andrew Cadzoe, said Green impressed.

Greene comes from the Park Ridges Pirates system where he was influenced by his then coach and renowned QAFL backman, Graham Adams, who coached the Pirates to a premiership.

Greene and Morningside’s Nathan Colenso are among several from that junior Pirates network to spread their wings into the QAFL.

Colenso was also nominated by Panthers coach Clint Watts as a Team of the Week contender after his performance on the forward line and on the ball for Morningside in its sensational one point win over Redland-Victoria Point, 7.9-51 to 7.8-50.

Watts said his best were Billy Pendlebury, wingman Darcy Cameron-Reeves, Colenso and ruck forward Brad Hodge.

Redland-Victoria Point were desperately close to winning, with Peter Yagmoor a leading player.

Yagmoor, with a piercing left foot, was a constant threat and the type capable of engineering a last second win for his side.

Coach Phil Carse said he started Yagmoor down back, but finished him up forward where he kicked a couple of goals. Carse also praised smaller defender Matt Thomson.

Jacob Simpson, who has dominated the opening weeks of the competition, was again a tower of strength for Maroochydore in its 18.11-119 defeat of Sherwood Districts 8.5-53

Comeback king Ben Sloan continued to gather miles in his legs in the midfield for Maroochydore with a four-star performance while 18-year-old wing/half forward Ben Thomas stole four goals for Maroochy.

Mt Gravatt’s centre half forward Harry Gobbie, on baller Joel Leah and centre half forward Gavin Grose helped the Vultures press hard for victory against Labrador.

Indeed the Tony Lynn-coached side led Labrador by nine points at three quarter time and an upset was in the making, but the favourites kicked on with 5-6 in the final term. Bryce Retzlaff kicked three goals for the winners.
