LIVESTREAM: School Premier League football representative matches against QAS and Roar under 16s

Schoolgirls and schoolboys from metropolitan Brisbane, Logan, the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Darling Downs have made the first representative teams for the history making games to be played at Meakin Park on Wednesday.

SPL girls coach Kelly Crew said the looming selection of the representative side had given players additional motivation to perform consistently across the recently completed SPL season.

“It gives them something extra, not just the SPL competition which they were striving for as a team, but also something individually they could strive for,’’ said Crew, a teacher from Cleveland State Community College.

Crew said the lure of making the representative team was added incentive to be consistent for their respective schools teams across the SPL season.

“It has given them an opportunity to see how they shape up against that competition, to see if they are ready for that next step,’’ Crew said.

Players from outside metropolitan Brisbane and Logan, from as far away as Chancellor State College (Will Brown and Connor Demerutis), Harristown SHS (Maddison Teakle, Jahream Richardson) and Palm Beach Currumbin SHS (Savannah Sproule, Dylan Remmers and Elijah Hughes), have earned selection in the two SPL representative teams.

Sproule will enter the match choke full of confidence after making her debut in the senior Gold Coast United women’s team just nine days earlier - the same weekend as her brother Xaiver made his debut in the United men’s team.

“Both getting Team of the Week in the same week was very exciting,’’ she said.

Teakle and Richardson said it was exciting to be selected in the representative team from the country and to be playing in front of talent scouts.

SPL boys coach Luke Morley from Palm Beach Currumbin said players in the SPL team had not just made it on ability, they had also made it because effort, behaviour, determination and ability were all taken into account.
