The Langer Reserves roared toward the finals, with Mabel Park, PBC SHS, Ipswich SHS and Redcliffe SHS finding the winners post in the final round of home and away games.

One of the top showings of the round came from Redcliffe SHS utility forward Max Kirkman who produced a stirring performance against Wavell SHS, at Wavell SHS, to inspire his side to a 22-nil victory.

Kirkman, who played lock and hooker throughout the contest, looked like an outside back in a forwards body and with his turn of speed he was able to attack little holes in Wavell’s defensive line and spring out of tackles.

A slippery customer whose physicality, speed and quick play the balls were assets of his game, Kirkman gave the Redcliffe pack that extra dimension needed to front a big Wavell pack that has done well this season.

“He was outstanding,” praised Redcliffe head of rugby league Jay Wilkinson.

“He found his front constantly and ran at blokes twice his size,” Wilkinson said of Kirkman, who made plenty of post contact metres.

So who joins Kirkman in the round seven Players of the Week? Read on.

LANGER RESERVES ROUND SEVEN PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Mabel Park 44 defeated Marsden 6

Onosa’I Howe (Mabel Park SHS)

Right second rower Howe impacted the Marsden defence with telling runs angled back toward the centre of the field.

He also defended strongly, but it was that power running which did a lot of damage early.

Riley Baker (Mabel Park SHS)

On the other side of the field, left second rower Baker was a threat with his dynamic running and strong defence.

He also crossed for a try.

Braddock Taylor (Mabel Park SHS)

Smack bang in the middle of the ruck the No.13 set a firm platform early with his straight, hard running and quick play the balls.

He did it all again during his second half stint, which included a 15m sprint to the line to score.

Matthew Joyce (Mabel Park SHS)

Left winger Matthew Joyce made a long run from his end of the field, scored a 30m try and was involved in other telling incursions.

He was still looking to make tough ruck runs in the final minutes of the match.

Special mention:

Tyson MacDonald (Mabel Park SHS)

Right winger Tyson McDonald was a handful with numerous sideline runs, one of which led to his own try.

Cooper Lewis (Marsden SHS)

It was just one of those days for Marsden who were caught on the hop early by the intensity of Mabel Park’s forward onslaught and trustful runs on the edge.

Out of it all Lewis held up his end of the bargain in a side which had plenty of effort, but as a group which could not match Mabel.

PBC defeated Keebra Park

Riley Loughland (PBC SHS)

Halfback Loughland’s kicking game was on song as he steered the Reds to a convincing win over Keebra. He controlled the game nicely, helped by the strong performance by his forwards.

Cooper Murphy (Keebra Park SHS)

The hooker was tireless through the middle of the field.

Murphy provided direction to Keebra’s middle forwards while enduring a huge workload in defence.

The Year 11 student continued to perform for his school. Like teammate Cooper Murphy who we mentioned earlier, Feaunati has a huge work rate.

He took a lot of tough carries and tried to lay a solid platform for his outside backs.

Dylan Watkins (PBC SHS)

As he so often does, fullback Watkins bobbed up again to score a try for PBC and looked dangerous at fullback.

He has been consistently one of the competition’s best players.

Taj Lateo (PBC SHS)

Much like Loughland, the play making Lateo kicked superbly and pulled the strings well. A class act in this company, he is not doubt benefiting from the experience of putting in some strong shifts for PBC’SHSs Firsts this season.

Lorenzo Oliva, Mel Nonu and Tugene David (Ipswich SHS)

Ipswich had three particularly eye-catching performers yesterday – prop Oliva, winger Mel Nonu and second rower Tugene David – but no one would deny Oliva earning most plaudits.

The Redbank Plains Bears junior wound up and played the entire match, turning back the clock to the old days when rugby league had no interchange players.

Nonu was his normal hard working self while David was strong in defence and a handful carrying the ball, with his nimble feet and strength in contact an asset.

Redcliffe’s ultra consistent forwards were again giants in the middle of the field with prop Toleafoa offering great go forward and edge forward Marley Baker bustling line running.

Together they got Redcliffe rolling forward and from there hooker Jackson Darmody and his halves were faultless.

Dermott Arthy (Redcliffe SHS)

The Eagles right winger announced himself at just the right times during Wednesday afternoon’s Langer Reserves clash, the headgear wearing pocket rocket scoring two tries with limited touches in the first half.

On the first occasion Arthy’s linespeed helped force an error and he pounced on lose ball and ran away 35m to score. Later in the first half, he muscled up to win a one-on-one strip and tear away for try No.2.

Before oranges, he had a hattrick.

Jack O’Hagan (Redcliffe SHS)

He made a trysaving tackle down in the right corner as the clock was dwindling down, Wavell closing in behind 26-18.

With pressure mounting, O’Hagan’s cover tackle was massive in the context of the game.

At the time, the rub of the green was going against Redcliffe and had Wavell scored, the Warriors would have had all the momentum in the final minutes of the game.

Even before making this tackle, the jinking O’Hagan was influential with his metreage out of yardage and kick returns.
