GPS First XV Rugby Team of the Week

Who made the GPS First XV Team of the Week? Here’s three names: Archie Xavier (Terrace), Campbell Watchirs (BGS), Will Sullivan (IGS). So who are the others?

GPS First XV rugby’s return from the COVID-19 lockdown wilderness was more a celebration of life and freedom last Saturday than a knife-edge sporting contest.

Students, parents and supporters poured into Toowoomba Grammar School, Brisbane Boys College, The Internationals Oval at Tennyson and Ross Oval, Nudgee, for four spirited games of schoolboy rugby.

SIX THINGS WE LEARNED FROM ROUND 7

ROUND 7 REPORT

Arch rivals St Joseph’s Nudgee College and St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace remain unbeaten after three completed rounds.

It is fair to say the performances of the round came from Nudgee pair Rob Toia and Daniel Maiava and TSS fly-half Syris Schmidt.

Terrace halves Archie Xavier and Mitchell Bodimeade then guided their team around, while BGS pushed, albeit unsuccessfully, for victory through the midfield pairing of Campbell Watchirs and Jackson Barling.

IGS year 11 student Stanley Reihana-Huen shone on debut, while BBC were well served by Blake Davies, Harry McLaughlin-Phillips, Peron Faimalo, captain Ollie Milne and hooker Uhila Senituli.

But who made the Team of the Week?

Nudgee centre star Rob Toia.

15. Jye Grey (TSS): A dynamic fullback who is quick to turn a counter attack into a full blown air raid. He was involved in three try scoring moves against TGS.

14. Blake Raymond (TSS): He started the season in a blaze of glory with a four try performance and added another three at the weekend.

13. Rob Toia (Nudgee College): Toia looked like a man playing against boys at stages against Churchie last weekend.

12. Campbell Watchirs: (Brisbane Grammar School): A mutli-talented sportsman, the BGS centre produced another stoic effort alongside Jackson Barling.

11. Blake Davis (BBC): The Brisbane Boys College No.15 was steadfast at the back and a position in the side and deserves his place on the wing.

10. Syris Schmidt (TSS): The Southport School’s captain of rugby was in rare touch and tore TGS to pieces. The competition was spoiled for choice for quality No.10s last weekend, with Mitch Bodimeade (Terrace), Byron Smith (Nudgee) and Harry McLaughlin-Phillips (BBC) shining, but Schmidt was one of the first chosen in the side.

9. Archie Xavier (Terrace): Xavier’s well balanced performance alongside his halve partner, Mitch Bodimeade, went a long way to deciding the match. Choose correctly when to pass, run and kick. Another accomplished No. 9 came from BCC’s Peron Faimalo while, if the game had flowed, one sensed Willem Johnstone (Nudgee) could have cut loose.

8. Jock MacPherson (Churchie): The Churchie tall timber was another willing performer who did everything to rally his side by leading from the front.

6. Will Sullivan (IGS): An athletic powerhouse with the strength of gigantor who flourished at the point of contact.

7. Joe Liddy (Terrace): The Terrace captain again led his team from the front, foraging for possession and carrying the ball forward with gusto.

5. Daniel Maiava (Nudgee): Maiava is a modern day tight forward marvel with the agility of a centre, work rate of a hooker and leap of a lock.

4. Ollie Milne (BBC): The possession winning BBC skipper led from the front and tried to get his team flowing.

3. Massimo DeLutiis (TSS): That the TSS backs feasted against Toowoomba Grammar was in large part due to the heavy combat efforts from the likes of DeLutiis.

2. Max Craig (Churchie): A true captain’s knock against Nudgee, with Craig rallying his team through effort on effort, and contributing strongly to Churchie’s maul and pick and drive work off attacking lineouts.

1. Macarius Pereira (Nudgee): Immovable in the scrum, Pereira and his prop partner Natiana Winikerei were also powerhouse ball carriers who slammed Nudgee onto the front foot.
