St Joseph’s College Gregory Terrace have continued their premiership winning form from 2021, starting this season with three wins from three games.
St Joseph’s Nudgee College and Ipswich Grammar School stand with them at the top of the table, starting their 2022 campaigns with three convincing victories.
Brisbane State High School had a bye last Saturday, while The Southport School got their first win of the season over Toowoomba Grammar School.
Round 3 Results:
St Joseph’s Nudgee College beat Anglican Church Grammar School, 3-1.
St Joseph’s College Gregory Terrace beat Brisbane Grammar School, 4-0.
Ipswich Grammar School beat Brisbane Boys’ College, 5-1.
The Southport School beat Toowoomba Grammar School, 2-0.
So who were the Best of the Round?
Chris Slater (Brisbane Boys College):
Slater has been selected in round 3 of GPS Football’s First XI Best of the Round due to his defensive efforts and willingness to adapt to a new role for the team. Despite BBC conceding five goals at the hands of Ipswich Grammar School, without Slater they would have conceded many more. In possession, he brought the ball out of defence eagerly, and always looked for opportunities to commence an attack. Despite the result, Slater was a constant resistance to the opponent.
Luke Blackwell and Declan Parkinson (Nudgee College):
Captain Luke Blackwell returned to the starting lineup on Saturday and was rewarded with a 3-1 victory over Anglican Church Grammar School. Blackwell was dominant in defence and controlled possession from the back third. He also chipped in with a goal. Parkinson followed suit to help Nudgee remain undefeated so far this season. He was disciplined in his positioning throughout the whole game and was physically strong and aggressive defensively.
Will Dent and Eddie Ince (Gregory Terrace):
Forward Will Dent scored a marvellous hat trick in Gregory Terrace’s 4-0 thumping over Brisbane Grammar School on Saturday afternoon. Dent was in everything and he showcased his class when the opportunities arose. Centre midfielder Eddie Ince had an amazing second-forty where he controlled the tempo of the game. Ince showed a lot of resilience when pushing through a frustrating first half, to step up and pile the pressure onto BGS in the second stanza. Ince was monumental in their win.
Kye and Callan Van Walsum (Ipswich Grammar School):
IGS brothers Kye and Callan both feature in this week’s Team of the Week following great performances to beat BBC 5-1 on Saturday afternoon. Kye broke down play in the midfield and retained possession very well. Callan defended well at fullback and was an extra outlet in possession by repeatedly joining the attack in wide areas.
Douglas Pearce and Lucas Rossie (Anglican Church Grammar School):
Once again the Churchie First XI football team collectively competed as a team well beyond their individual abilities as they continue to work hard for each other. The backs are being led courageously by Douglas Pearce. Lucas Rossi continues to be the main danger for Churchie in the attacking areas of the park. Both boys are excellent role models and lead the team as best they can.
Jayden Hearn and Thisaja Samarawickrama (Toowoomba Grammar School):
Hearn was a standout performer in a losing side on Saturday afternoon. He used some excellent footwork to create multiple scoring chances. Samarawickrama had a great defensive game. He won the ball repeatedly against the TSS attacking players, as they mounted repeated pressure on the TGS goal.
Honourable Mentions:
Liam Green (IGS):
Green played out of position in the midfield from centre. He worked very hard without the ball.
Lachie Nye (BGS):
Nye stood up to the physical battle with GT and played with composure.
Teddy Callahan (BGS):
Callahan was calm on the ball and won plenty of tackles in the midfield.
