Nudgee College have edged one step closer to achieving the ultimate goal— a GPS First XI football premiership.

Competition powerhouses Gregory Terrace and Ipswich Grammar School battled it out in a gruelling contest while The Southport School and Toowoomba Grammar School came away as winners.

Let’s see the round 6 results:

The Southport School beat Brisbane Grammar School, 1-0

St Joseph’s College Gregory Terrace drew Ipswich Grammar School, 3-3

St Joseph’s Nudgee College beat Brisbane State High School, 3-1

Toowoomba Grammar School beat Brisbane Boys’ College, 1-0

So who were the best performers of the round?

Brisbane Boys’ College:

Round six saw the BBC First XI football team travel up the range in what was the beginning of the run into the end of the season. With both teams struggling in the front half of the season, the home team were left buoyant following their first win of the season against Anglican Church Grammar School in the round previous. Despite this, the visitors travelled to Toowoomba feeling refreshed following the washout in Round five. The match started slowly with both teams trying their best to break the deadlock and it was the visitors who looked more likely heading into the break. It was evident from the first half that there would be a goal or two difference in the result, and five minutes into the second half, TGS secured the first and only goal from a central freekick, 30 yards out. As the match drew closer, the TGS captain was dismissed, giving BBC a glimmer of hope. Despite this, the home side held on to the one goal buffer to see the game out. Next week, BBC takes on Anglican Church Grammar School.

Jack Hogarth, the BBC First XI Football Captain has been courageously leading the line for weeks, despite finding himself in an uncustomary role of number nine. Hogarth has had to learn quickly and despite his best effort is still yet to get off the mark this season. He was unlucky with a number of attempts that either narrowly missed or were well saved in the TGS match. Of these efforts, the closest was when Jack won the ball 40 yards out and recognised the opposing goalkeeper was well out of his area. With a snapshot, the ball looked goal bound only to miss by the smallest of margins. The BBC Captain will head into next week’s grudge match against Churchie desperate to break his duck.

St Joseph’s College Gregory Terrace:

Travelling to IGS is always a difficult place to go and come away with a result so the GT First XI football team knew it was going to be a difficult match-up. In a game of two halves, IGS were by far the better team in the first half, before GT seemed to find their way into the game in the second. Despite going up 1-0, IGS looked and played better than GT, leading 2-1 at half time. IGS then scored their third goal of the afternoon however GT showed an incredible attitude to pull two goals back. While missing clear opportunities and hitting the post late, the boys in black and red were inches red all three points.

Elijah Eustace and Pieter Bellas were great at the back and without them absorbing the endless pressure from the first half, the game may have been out of reach. Sani Logoro, Hudson Asnicar and Will Dent all scored on the day.

GT Sports Activities Coordinator Mitch Edwards said: “ upon reflection a draw was a fair result, and you could see both teams at the end of the game completely off their feet knowing they had thrown absolutely everything at it.”

“Usually a draw would’ve been reasonable for both teams but this isn’t the result either of us wanted with Nudgee now well clear at the top while having a game in hand on the majority of the competition.”

Ipswich Grammar School:

Elijah Vincent: Vincent got three assists and worked very hard defensively, and created several attacking opportunities.

Kye Van Walsum: Van Walsum had another outstanding performance on Saturday. Defensively he was very strong and did well to win the ball in key moments and help us transition immediately to attack.

Luka Mirkovic: Mirkovic played out of position at centre back and had a cracking game. He performed strongly and made good decisions with and without the ball.

The Southport School:

In a very even contest against BGS, TSS secured a win in the dying minutes. Thanks to the work of Murphy Baker who was substituted on in the final 10 minutes of the match, TSS were able to score and run away 1-0 winners. In a one-on-one with the keeper, Baker managed to slide one beneath him to secure a late winner.

Lachlan Duke: The TSS Goalkeeper helped to keep a clean sheet for TSS with a number of clinical saves. In particular, Duke made a save in the first half which proved vital for the overall result.

Koen Gemeri and Isaac Jurkic: Both teams created chances however neither side was able to execute for the majority of the match. Some good aerial defence by Gemeri helped the back four from TSS keep out their forwards on a number of occasions. Jurkic was also responsible for creating a number of attacking raids on the edges in the first half.

St Joseph’s Nudgee College:

Nudgee College powered on to win their sixth game of the season, defeating a powerful BSHS side. BSHS scored early and led until the last 25 minutes when Nudgee put on a masterclass to come back and win 3-1. By the end it could have been even more comfortable for Nudgee who were being roared on by their home crowd.

Rylan Brownlie and Liam Bryne: Brownlee was outstanding in attack and Liam Bryne was another standout performer for the home side. Nudgee plays GT next week in what should be an exciting game.

Brisbane State High School:

Kurt Huppert: BSHS’s First XI Goalkeeper Kurt Huppert put in a man of the match performance on Saturday afternoon against Nudgee College. During an even first half Huppert made a couple of excellent reaction saves to keep BSHS in the lead. In a second half where Nudgee College dominated, Huppert again had to make a string of brilliant stops to keep his side in the game. This included some unbelievable double and even triple saves to deny the Nudgee attack.

Toowoomba Grammar School:

The TGS team showed tremendous courage in a closely fought contest with BBC, where the game was decided by small details.

Richard Dean scored early in the second half with a ferocious free kick to give the home team a 1-0 lead. This was the decisive goal that allowed his team to come away 1-0 winners.

Callum Francis as Goalkeeper for TGS kept his first clean sheet of the season, making some timely saves to keep BBC at bay as they chased their first win of the season.
