The Marsden SHS football community has celebrated the school’s historic first ever Queensland Schools Premier League minor premiership.
The side was first past the post in the home and away season, a milestone moment in the school’s glittering sporting story.
Coached by Graham Fyfe, the success had been years in the making and not just a reflection on the 2024 performance by the current squad.
Asked the key to the squad’s success this season, Fyfe said: “We’ve had some of these players for a few years and we balance their training with what they do at club land, focus on their strengths that they bring to the team and let them play with the shackles off.’’
He said it was important to recognise the all around contribution of junior school coaches who had played their part in helping mould the side.
“These players have had good mentors and coaches since being here at Marsden SHS.
“We also recruited a few good players/students last year which have added strength to the squad.
“Like all schools we never have everyone available so having a strong squad is important.’’
“Most the boys have been in the program for a few years and we have great coaches here at Marsden SHS.
“We started pretty much at the bottom of the second league, only a few years ago, so it’s great to see the hard work pay off.’’
he said the team’s defence was particularly strong. “We have been strong defensively and this starts at the top of the pitch,’’ Fyfe said.
“The lads who play work hard off the ball and if it gets to the goalkeeper we have a strong one with bags of potential to kick on and have a career in the game.’’
