It says everything about the work ethic of medal winning gymnastic Georgia Godwin that less than 16 hours after being released from the Commonwealth Games village, she was back training at Kedron.

The Delta Gymnastics athlete, who claimed silver and bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games, trained last Tuesday morning before returning to the gymnastics centre the same afternoon to a heroes welcome.

A life sized banner acclaiming her deeds was unveiled and children swamped her for autographs in what was a home coming to warm the hearts of those who witnessed it.

“I drove in and saw the banner and I could not wipe the smile of my face,’’ Godwin said.

“I saw all the kids and I remember when I was one of those kids looking up to Hollie Dykes and everyone.

“The tables have turned and I am glad I get a chance to give back to the gymnasts community and inspire these little ones.’’

Teenage Delta gymnast Madison Thompson said Godwin, 20, was an inspiration.

“Particularly for the younger girls who look up her and are inspired by the way she trains and her attitude toward everything. She is also someone who is easy to have a conversation with,’’ Thompson said.

While being a celebrity sat uneasily with Godwin, she still worse a smile the same size of the one which was beamed around the world when she stood on the medal podium at the Games.

“It feels a little bit weird. It is not what I am used to. I hope I can keep inspiring them as long as I am competing,’’ the Moreton Bay College past student said.

“It has always been my dream to go to the Games. Along with the Olympics, it has been up there in my dreams since I was little.

“It has kind of sunk in, but I have not had time to settle and think about it.

“It is all very exciting.’’

She said her performances had given her the confidence to chase her next milestone - attending the 2020 Olympic Games.

“It has given me the confidence that if I train hard and stay injury free, I do have the chance to compete against the best gymnasts in the world.

“I have worlds (championship) at the end of the year and hope to qualify for that and do well and the next major goal is the Olympics.’’
