Records tumbled on the track and in the field during a gala day of athletics action.

There was drama in the opening events of the day when the 12 years 1500m record tumbled three times.

Mt St Michael’s Zelmari Van Loggerenberg soared to the new CaSSSA Cup record in a time of 5:21.51.

But two others also passed the old 1500m mark - Van Loggerenberg’s school friend Laura Bray (MSM) and Alice Gregory 5:36.60 (Lourdes Hill College), but not in the time of Van Loggerenberg.

Both Bray and Van Loggerenberg, from The Gap Little Athletics Club, said they had ambitions to go as far as they can in the sport and had been inspired by Brisbane being awarded the 2032 Olympics.

St Rita’s College high jumper Gemma Hutchings then launched herself into the CaSSSA record books in the 16 years, drawing level with the 1981 record with a jump of 170cm, and then over it on two occasions - 172cm and 174m.

The previous record holder was J Gooden (All Hallows).

Hutchings, a state standard netballer for her age group and a national squad member, is a wildcard in the sport of high jump and never expected to break 170cm today.

And also on the field, Claudia Legge (17 years plus) surpassed the old javelin mark with a new CaSSSA record throw.

Earlier, in the 13 years 1500m, Abbie Hegarty (All Hallows) and her school mate Charlotte Brown claimed Div 1 and Div 2 wins respectively, then Romy Vickers (St Rita’s), a renowned triathlete, powered to victory in the Div 1 14 years 1500m.

Another St Rita’s student, Elke Cooper, also claimed the 14 years Div 2 over the same distance.

Brigidine College were propelled onto the victory podium by Div 1 1500m runner Alanna Dicks, and then again when Emma Neish finished second in the 17-19 1500m.

All Hallows’ School enjoyed more success over the 1500ms in the 15 years Div 2 (Emilia Lawrence), the 16 years 1500m (Caitlin Elder, second) and in the 16 years Div 2 (Cara Moffatt, second) and the 17-19 years Div (Elizabeth Bryant).

Then in the 15 years long jump Anna Drew (All Hallows) found the winning jump from Amelia Bailey and Lily Tran, while Eva Barrie prevailed in Divison 2.

The sprinters brought their best form with All Hallows’ School, MSM and St Rita’s College dominating.

Emily Kennedy, Audrey Rayfield, Anna Drew, Issy McGrath and Maya Pavlovski all finished first in their respective age divisions for All Hallows’, while Amelia Lock and Caitlin Le Mare crossed first for St Rita’s.

MSM found placings courtesy of Sophie Willman, Ella Jurcynski, Georgia Gibson, Jess Vacher, Ellen Ford (first, 15 years), Elli Harriden and Amber Beloff.

But breaking those three school’s run at the placines were Mt Alvernia pair Charloi Lathman (15 years (Div 7)) and Clara Morris (15 years Div 8).

Mt Alvernia champion Jemma Keefe, although not at full fitness, did not disappoint by winning the Div 1 17-19 years discus.
