Hayley Lewis’ son Kai blazed a sub 50 second personal best 100m freestyle effort in a sensational finale to all age national swimming championships on Monday night on the Gold Coast.
Kai Taylor hit the wall in 49.91, a huge PB Performance.
The time confirms the St Peters Lutheran college schoolboy will be in contention for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
“I am extremely happy and relieved to have broken 50 seconds and won,’’ Taylor said.
“My coaches were happy but we know there is still a lot of improvements I can make to get sub 49 which is the new goal.’’
It is believed Taylor is the first son to win an Australian title who’s mum is an Olympian. Taylor swam in the 17 years age group.

Coming off a Schools record 50.01 second 100m burst last month, Taylor had to wait until the last night to unleash in his pet sprint event.
Having warmed his engines in team relay wins and a second placing in the 17 years 200m freestyle, Taylor was locked and loaded on the starting block.
He flew off the blocks in a high class affair featuring Isaac Cooper and Elliot Weber, chasing the cherished sub 50 time.
Taylor’s time would have almost certainly swum him onto the Australian team for the world junior championships - had they not been cancelled due to COVID-19.
Hayley Lewis is one of Queensland’s sporting favourites who represented Australia with distinction at Olympic and Commonwealth Games.
