Iona welcomed back two of their senior players who missed round 2 against St. Edmunds while touring United States on the basketball tour.

Both players were critical in Iona’s victory over Ashgrove.

Zane MacRae (Iona)

MacRae dominated the moment he stepped onto the floor. He showed his versatility with some classy steals and two big dunks which energised the black and white crowd.

Rob Hinkler (Iona)

Hinkler’s ability to crash the boards and run the floor on the offensive end led Iona to an early lead which they never squandered.

He quickly found his rhythm in the first half which provided some highlights in the form of exciting finishes and crucial defensive stops.

St Edmund’s 74 beat Padua 27

Lachlan Matthews (Padua)

Matthews stood tall against a tireless onslaught from St. Edmunds.

It was a tough day at the office in many respects, but Mathews showed confidence, control and composure under trying circumstances.

Ethan Battensby (St Edmund’s)

In 14 minutes Battensby scored for 22 points, eight rebounds and five steals.

He was an absolute weapon on defence and was able to convert turnovers into points in his brief time on the court.

Michael Tate (St Edmund’s)

The ‘Iceman’ celebrated his birthday by helping himself to a couple of buckets from inside and out.

He was rock solid on the glass and is looking more and more like himself after spending most of the pre-season injured.

He finished with eight points and eight rebounds in a 10 minute birthday special.

The Saints were in good form on Saturday, executing on offence and making consistent stops on defence to warm up for Ashgrove.

Despite having a few key players away, the bench stepped up with 11 players scoring.

Seniors Cooper Rowlings and Lachlain Rolison combined for 54 points in a strong showing.

Rowlings owned the paint with six blocks and had a handful of thunderous dunks in his 33 point showing.

Rolison (21 points) set the tone early in the game.

Hunter Johnson (St Patrick’s)

Johnson did a job on offence and was consistently aggressive towards the hoop.

He kept the scoreboard rolling with great poise around the basket and created opportunities for his teammates.

Cian Morgan (St Patrick’s)

In his first game of 1st V basketball morgan had an extremely tough matchup against Cooper Rowlings and did a stellar job, competing fiercely before finding form on the back of his physicality and off-ball defence.

Weaving in and out, Koko split the Villa defence and caused mass confusion.

His attention to detail with his offence and defence helped the St Laurie’s cause and his pesky presence made it difficult for Villa to finish open looks.

James Gao (St Laurence’s)

Gao attacked the rim full of confidence and proved a handful to contain down the lane.

He was Mr cool under pressure, sinking buckets with hands in his face.
