A generation of Marsden SHS players have been inspired by elite past students from the school

Langer Trophy livestream 2021: Generation of Marsden SHS players have been inspired by elite past students from the school. And Leon Te Hau is one of them.

Leon Te Hau sat in the Cameron Smith grandstand and reflected on some of those famous players who had gone before him representing the Marsden SHS Langer Trophy outfit.

The greatest of all, Smith himself, Jaydn Su’a, Brenko Lee, Corey Allan, Chris Sandow, Antonia Winterstein, TC Robati, Israel Folau, Tesi Nui.

People like them have cut a pathway for young players like Ta Hau.

He is a recent Queensland under 18 merit team selection who starred in Marsden’s first round win over Keebra Park, and whose team take on Ipswich SHS tomorrow - all livestreamed by www.couriermail.com.au

“There are a lot of great players there,’’ said the Beenleigh Lions junior, reflecting on those before him.

“Honestly it is an honour to step up knowing they have gone through the whole system,’’ he said.

It is Ta Hau’s third season in the Langer Trophy after being blooded in 2019 as a year 10 student, then playing some games on the wing last year.

But this season he is the starting fullback, the position he likes most. “I have played anywhere in the backline, but I like fullback.’’

He played very well in Marsden SHS’s round 1 win by 36-nil over Keebra Park SHS, and making the Queensland merit side was also a huge effort given the quality of players at the recent state carnival.

Asked what he liked most about the Marsden SHS rugby league program, the Carbrook State School past student said it was the support of the staff to help better himself and his fellow students as players and people. “They support you not just on the field, but off the field and for the future.’’

Meanwhile, head coach Matthew Hartigan said Marsden SHS had had a win off the field as well, with sporting goods company Puma a community partner of the Mako’s this season.

“This will allow the entire community access to incredible shoe, boot and clothing range. We are thrilled to have such an elite industry brand join our world standard school community,’’ Hartigan said.

“We look forward to the exciting opportunities that lie in this partnership over the coming years.
