WALTER Taylor Bridge has a romantic link that could rival Prague’s Charles Bridge and Paris’ Pont des Arts.
It was officially opened on Valentine’s Day 78 years ago.
The bridge, which connects Indooroopilly to Chelmer, is having a resurgence of popularity since Brisbane City Council allowed tours of one of the pylons.
More than 1300 people have stepped inside the bridge pylon, which was lived in until 2009, and has a balcony overlooking the Brisbane River.
The bridge’s history includes the discover of gold and a mighty tale of lost convicts.
Tours of up to six people are led by volunteers at the Brisbane Greeter program, which also marks an anniversary on February 14.
It is two years since the program started conducting short walking and public transport tours in the City, giving visitors a glimpse of Brisbane’s history, architecture, people, surrounds and culture.
The Walter Taylor Legacy Greet includes the bridge, pylon, Graceville Church, Graceville Central Buildings, Laurel Ave, Walter Taylor Workshops, family homes and more.
The bridge will not host a tour on its birthday day as the 140 Brisbane Greeter volunteers will be celebrating their own two-year milestone with lunch and games at New Farm Park.
Brisbane Greeters is looking for more volunteers to join the program.
