The Thunder, proudly made up of all Queensland born and bred talent, has been overseen by coach Benn Lees and captained by decorated Australian player Bronwen Knox.
Fast-emerging Stingers goal keeper Gabi Palm, a young veteran from the Barracudas club, is another leader in a youthful squad along with three time Olympian Kate Gynther.
Recent Stingers selection Sophie Milliken and baysider Jessica Emerson are another two with senior international experience in a group which has 15-year-old Lara Owen of Mermaids as the youngest in the squad.
Three other members of the Yeronga-based Mermaids in the squad — Kate Blew, East Brisbane resident Matilda Elliott and Casey Dalziel while Stuartholme schoolgirl Phoebe Leech and All Hallows’ School student Charlotte Harris were also rookies on the rise.
“We are all about developing the local talent,’’ Lees said about the squad which is supported by the Queensland Academy of Sport.
The emergence of the Mermaids club as the powerhouse junior club of Australia, and the time-honoured production line of the established clubs like Barracudas at South Brisbane, among others, had helped the high standard of Queensland youth water polo which was now flowing into the senior ranks.
The full squad is: Gabi Palm, Kate Blew, Amelia Hodgson, Zoe Balmanno, Sophie Milliken, Bronwen Knox, Charlize Andrews, Kate Gynther, Kasey Dalziel, Phoebe Leech, Jess Emerson,
Tabi Jones, Tenealle Fasala, Charlotte Harris, Matilda Elliott, Laura Shannon, Lara Owen, Kate Power, Georgia Hickey and Bridget Leeson-Smith.
