The prestigious AFLQ Schools Cup will proceed this year, with more than 4500 primary school aged Australian footballers now striving to help their school teams qualify for the State Championship Gala Weekend on the Sunshine Coast in late October.
AFL Queensland CEO Dean Warren said after uncertain times due to the COVID-19 crisis, it was “fantastic’’ the competition would proceed at the Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex.

“It’s a credit to all involved that the competition is kicking off next month,” he said.
“AFLQ Schools Cup has a proud history of nurturing and developing some of the state’s best talent. We look forward to competition starting again in a safe, controlled environment, compliant with the required protocols outlined by the state government.”
After qualifying matches over the next two months, finals would be played on Friday, October 23, with semi-finals and grand finals on October 24.
However, AFLQ Schools and Growth Manager Damien Mitchelmore said the AFLQ Schools Cup secondary competition component had to be cancelled due to the impact of COVID-19.
“We apologise to all the schools and their students for this unavoidable cancellation, but we are already planning to relaunch our Premier State-wide competition in 2021.’’
The Courier-Mail and News affiliates in the south east will again live stream qualifying matches leading up to the October 23-24 finale on The Sunshine Coast.
