A 30-member squad from the powerhouse Mermaids water polo club is in the United States for an Easter school holiday training camp. The Mermaids are visiting Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, San Diego, Irvine and Anaheim during the trip.

A 30-member squad from the powerhouse Mermaids water polo club is in the United States for an Easter school holiday training camp.
The Mermaids are visiting Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, San Diego, Irvine and Anaheim during the trip.
Mermaids founder Nicola Johnson, who established the Yeronga-pool based club five years ago, said the aim of the trip was two-fold.

“The aim of the USA trip is to continue to build on the strong family culture that we have at Mermaids among the players, coaches and parents as well as to play water polo,’’ Johnson said.
“We will also be playing against girls our age in the No. 1 women’s water polo nation in the world.’’
She said the group would also enjoy the sights of California.
Mermaids is coming off an extraordinary period in its brief history.
At the start of the year Mermaids won an unprecedented three gold medals and one silver medal in women’s competition at the 2019 water polo Australia junior nationals.
Mermaids also have their first four senior Queensland representatives and late last month won a bundle of A division grand finals at the BWPL titles.
