Ruby Harris’ year to remember continues after she scored in each of her first three senior representative matches for the Brisbane Blaze this month.
The St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School past student was drafted into the Blaze squad for the new interstate hockey competition called Hockey One league, and has scored in each of Brisbane’s wins.
Repaying the Brisbane selector’s faith caps an amazing year for Harris whose achievements include:
+ playing in the Queensland under 18 gold winning team, including scoring in the final to beat NSW
+ helping the Queensland under 21s to gold
+ selection in both the National Junior Squad (under 21s) and the Hockey Australia Nationals Futures Squad (under 18s).

+ Winning the Brisbane Women’s Hockey’s Highest Representative Honours award after taking out the competition’s Rookie of the Year in 2018.
Harris, who last night was crowned South East Advertiser Local Sports Star of the year after being nominated by her Easts club, said a combination of a refreshing environment at Easts, more experience and playing and training without the rigours of year 12 commitments contributed to her season.
“It was a really good season. I made all the squads I wanted to make and had worked hard for,’’ she said.
Harris was enjoying a better balanced life now around work, university commitments and hockey.
She said not having extracurricular school activities meant she could enjoy hockey more.
Harris said her game had matured playing at a higher lever with senior players.
HOW THE LOCAL SPORTS STAR NIGHT UNFOLDED
“Last year in the under 18s I was still focused on hitting the ball, but now I have been able to have different shots on goal. My decision making is better,’’ Harris said.
She said her club coach, Mel Wells, and her Easts teammates had also contributed greatly to making her a better player. “I gained confidence from my club team,’’ she said.
Harris will be in the Brisbane Blaze team which plays its final home game on November 2.
