Ruby Harris, Angelina Tignani crowned sportswomen of the year at St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School

Australian schoolgirl hockey representative Ruby Harris and Australian javelin champion Angelina Tignani have been crowned sportswoman and junior sportswoman of the year respectively at St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School.

Australian schoolgirl hockey representative Ruby Harris and Australian javelin champion Angelina Tignani have been crowned sportswoman and junior sportswoman of the year respectively at St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School.

Harris is a decorated hockey representative who early this year reached the pinnacle of schoolgirl hockey when she wore the green and gold in South Africa.

Her long list of milestones also included:

* Winning the Shirley Otto Award as the Brisbane women’s hockey rookie of the year.

* Playing for the Queensland under 18s.

*Being leading goal scorer at the Australian Under 18 Championships.

* Playing Division 1 and helping her club Easts make the grand final.

Tignani is the under 15 javelin national record holder and will defend her crown at the national titles in Cairns from December7-10.

“I used to be a runner, but started javelin when I was 12. I found it interesting. Running is pretty basic but when it gets to throwing, it is a whole different concept.’’

Tignani has produced three national record throws in the last 18 months but did not feel under pressure to do it again at the national titles in Cairns.

While her focus is on the nationals, she has already set some goals for 2019 when she will enter Year 9 at St Aidan’s.

“Next year I hope to break the Australian record for the 15s and 16s and then, when I am 16, try and make the Australian team for the worlds (junior championships),’’ she said.

She said she was inspired by attending the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

Tignani will be joined at the national titles in Cairns this week by two fellow students from St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School.

Triple jumper Georgia Gullo and runner Shelbee Welsh produced qualifying times during the year.

St Aidan’s Director of Cross Country and Athletics, Lauren Murry, said Gullo’s background in gymnastics made jumping events a natural choice once she crossed over into athletics.

“Her consistency and commitment to training across the two years proved worth it when she jumped a massive personal best to place second at the state titles and earn her spot on the Queensland team,’’ Murry said.

She said it was the second successive year Welsh had made the Queensland team.

“With her work ethic and Nik’s (Bojik, coach) guidance I can see her in many more.’’

Meanwhile, St Aidan’s state winning junior division nitro team will fly Queensland’s flag at the Nitro Schools final on December 10. The team includes consists of Angelina Tignani, Ella Edwards, Gemma Casaceli, Isabella Donaldson, Emma-Kate Watt and Tayla Syke.
