Meet arguably the most successful junior sporting team Australia over the last 18 months.
The Pink Mermaids under 14 water polo team has swept all before them during an extraordinary period in the club’s short history.
The most recent milestone for the side was last week when the outfit was named the Quest Community Newspapers Local Sports Star team of excellence.
The Mermaids’ achievements include:
+ the undefeated state and Australian National Youth Champions
+ undefeated Australian, Queensland and Brisbane Championships
The success of the team is leading to individuals also achieving, with three girls named in the Queensland Thunder under 18 team, despite being just 14 years old.
In addition, all 13 team members were selected in the Queensland training squad this year, with 12 progressing into Queensland teams.
The overall Mermaids Club is now the No. 1 junior water polo club in Australia and much of that success is due to this group of outstanding young players.
The club was only started earlier this decade by former Queensland player Nicola Johnson.
Now it is a major water polo hub based out of the Yeronga pool, drawing players from across Brisbane’s west, north and south.
“We were very humbled to be recognised as the best junior team in Queensland across all sports,’’ Johnson said.
“The girls have had a great season in the pool but to be compared to all other teams in all sports who competed across Queensland and come out on top and be named as the Quest 2019 State Winner for Team of Excellence was fantastic.
“The girls had such a great year in the pool together and this was topped off with a wonderful evening last week at the Quest Local Sports Stars Awards Dinner.
“The Q&A with Scott Prince was great and we have taken his parting words as our mantra moving forward as we resonated with what he said.”
