When the starter presses the siren to get the 2020 Brisbane Schoolgirl Rowing Association Head of the River under way on August 29, Claire Ryan’s heart will be racing.
The All Hallows’ School First VIII captain, Ryan said nothing beat Head of the River day.
“A bit of competition is really good,’’ she said after finishing training with her crew earlier this week at West End.
“It gets the nerves going and wakes you up a bit and gives your something to look forward to - otherwise you are doing it all for nothing.
“And you also see friends from other schools that you have met through rowing, and all the mingling between grades is very good. as well’’
Win, lose or draw - it does not really matter. Competing, improving and doing their best and enjoying the sport were keys for the All Hallows’ rowers.

“The girls really look forward to Saturdays (regattas leading toward the Head of the River),’’ said Head of Rowing Paul Brown.
“It brings the week together when they go out and race and all we look for is they do their best each Saturday.’’
Brown said the All Hallows’ School rowing program benefited the students in both life and sport.
“It teaches the girls really good life skills, organisational skills and it also teaches them team work and responsibility toward each other.
“And it also gives them a sense of achievement. They are very dedicated, rowing in winter, and all those things go toward a really good educational outcome.’’
Ryan said the All Hallows program was a nice balance between competitive and fun.
“It is a balance between a really serious culture, as well as having fun and being very friendly and that is really good about All Hallows,’’ she said.
This year’s First VIII is again coached by Agustin Radero.
