Logan’s Layton Reid helped the Australian Junior Steelers softball team to win a gold medal at the this month’s world championships in Canada.

The teenager from Boronia Heights, who has been nominated as a Local Sports Star, performed brilliantly under pressure. according to his coach Laing Harrow.

“He wasn’t at his best early on,” Harrow said of the Logan City Softball Association junior. “There were a few walks and wild pitches. But he got to the third inning with the lead, and he settled down and did an outstanding job.”

Harrow said Reid’s pitching performance in the final against Japan was sensational.

Reid said he was proud of the achievement and thanked two men, Ross tickle and Dave Metikingi, for putting him in a position to make the side by helping him recover from a knee reconstruction 12 months ago.

Reid said he was originally a baseball player.

“Then I followed my brother into softball,’’ he said.

“I have been playing softball since I was nine. I started playing softball after my older brother Jayden.

“I made the met west team three years in a row on my second year playing for met west, then made my first Queensland team in the primary schoolboys at 11.

“That was amazing back then, and it brings back great memories as all the Queensland boys in the junior Steelers team were with me right back then also.

“It is so awesome we are all still playing together.’’

Harrow singled out Reid among four players who led Australia’s charge at the championships.

Reid’s accomplishment is even more meritorious when you consider Japan were the world’s top ranked team entering the tournament.
