Former Queensland State of Origin great Trevor Gillmeister is helping a teenager achieve his sporting dreams.
Gillmeister has donated a signed State of Origin jersey for bidding to help raise cash for rising decathlete Ashley Moloney to get to July’s World Under 20 Athletic Championships in Finland.
Finances are strained for Logan resident Moloney, 18, who has been selected for the championships.
To ensure he can attend, Gillmeister donated the jersey and a framed photo, with signatures featuring many of the Queensland Origin captains, including his own.
The piece features the likes of Wally Lewis, Cameron Smith, Darren Lockyer and Gorden Tallis.
Moloney’s mother Alyson was moved by Gillmeister’s gesture. “It is lovely of Trevor to organise this, he has gone above and beyond,” she said.
Moloney, a junior from the Jimboomba Athletic Club who now trains with Eric Brown at the UQ Athletics Centre, was lost for words. “I don’t know what to say,’’ he said.
Gordon Park resident Gillmeister said Moloney, was a good person who deserved his chance on the world stage.
“He is a good young kid and the last thing I want him to worry about are finances,’’ Gillmeister said.
“By opening bidding for the jersey, hopefully that will raise funds toward going to the championships.’’
Gillmeister captained Queensland in the remarkable 1995 series clean sweep.
