A FISHERMAN who helped retrieve a dog from the Brisbane River where it had been weighed down with a concrete block says he hasn’t stopped thinking about it since.

Jason Harris was fishing with a friend off the Goodna boat ramp on Monday when the dog was spotted in the water.

“Me and a mate of mine had the day off so we went down for a fish,” he said.

A young boy and his father were fishing on the other side of the ramp.

“Within about ten minutes, the young fella was like ‘is that a fish?’” Mr Harris said.

The group quickly realised it wasn’t, and contacted authorities about what they’d found floating 1.5m from the bank.

“We realised pretty much straight away that it was a dog as soon as the kid pointed it out. You could see the colour of it,” he said.

Mr Harris said the tide had risen and covered the animal by the time help arrived.

“You couldn’t see it properly, so the dad jumped in his kayak and found it. He kind of got the rope up, but then you realised how much weight there was to it because he couldn’t move it,” he said.

“It was amazing the weight on it. The council guy tried to reach the rope, so I kind of climbed in there to help him.”

“I grabbed it thinking it wouldn’t be that heavy, but as soon as I did, you realised the full extent of the weight of it,” he said.

“I almost ended up in the water when I tried to lift it out. And as we got it in, we turned the young fella away.”

Mr Harris said all the men were stunned by what they pulled out of the water.

“We just couldn’t believe someone would do that to a dog. It’s not right,” he said.

They put the dog in a blanket, and the RSPCA were notified.

Mr Harris said he hadn’t stopped thinking about what he’d seen.

“I’ve got a dog myself and she’s getting plenty of pats at the moment,” he said.

“Whoever did that is deranged. Anyone who can do that to an innocent creature is just stuffed up.”

RSPCA Queensland chief inspector Daniel Young said vets will carry out a post-mortem to determine the dog’s cause of death.

“We are appealing for information about anyone seen acting suspiciously in the area and any sightings of the dog in the past few days,” he said.

“It would be useful if anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage shot in the area got in touch so we can work out who is responsible.”
