One of the world’s biggest on-street bicycle events, the Tour de Brisbane, will draw more than 5000 riders and many more spectators to the city this Sunday (April 10).
The popular event, cancelled twice in the past few years due to Covid, is shaping up to have one of its best years yet this time.
But TransLink and Brisbane City Council have warned motorists and bus passengers to factor in widespread road closures across the city, mostly in the morning.
The impacts will be felt from Wynnum to Logan, the CBD and Brisbane’s inner-west.
Some roads will be closed until early afternoon, although many will reopen by about 10am.
“This is a world-class cycling event in support of a great cause and we’re excited to play our part in making it a success,” Head of TransLink Sally Stannard said.
“It’s important to note that in addition to widespread impacts on suburban roads, major transport routes such as Roma St, the Inner City Bypass, Legacy Way Tunnel, Western Fwy, Centenary Mwy and South East Busway will be closed during the event.
“These closures, particularly of the South East Busway and parts of the Northern and Eastern Busways, will have an impact on public transport buses, which will be diverted, use temporary stops or cancelled in a small number of cases.
“Catching the train on Sunday might be the best way to get around for some commuters, while we encourage everyone to plan ahead, allow for extra travel time and/or delay their travel.
“The best way for people to get live traffic updates during the event is at qldtraffic.qld.gov.au, while the TransLink website and social media channels will have information on public transport impacts.’’
There are free activities for the whole family during the event including a Story Bridge Community Ride and Free Victoria Park Fun Run.
Cyclists can tackle a range of routes including a 110km Gran Fondo, 80km, 50km and 14km rides.
Event director Mike Crawley said the 2022 Australian Unity Tour de Brisbane welcomed first timers, recreational athletes, families and professional racers.
“Our focus in 2022 is to invite every Queenslander to join us for a celebration in our city,” Mr Crawley said.
The event is supported by the Brisbane Cycling Festival, which runs until April 14.
Riders can register up until early Sunday morning.
The Common Good, which funds organ transplant research at the Prince Charles Hospital, will be a major beneficiary of the day’s fundraising.
