A federal MP and the Centenary Suburbs RSL Sub Branch are encouraging residents to mark Anzac Day at home with a driveway tribute to Australia’s war heroes.

Federal ALP MP for Oxley Milton Dick and RSL Sub Branch president Georges Lefevre said they would both be standing in their driveways at 6am to salute the fallen on Anzac Day.

“I’ll be paying my respects by standing on my driveway at dawn on April 25 knowing that I’ll be joined by thousands more doing the same right across our community,” Mr Dick said.

Mr Lefevre said he would also honour Anzac Day in the same way.

“We are asking everyone to do this; to honour our servicemen and women; to recite The Ode and listen to the last post of their phones.”

Mr Dick said with the support of RSL Queensland and despite Anzac Day services being

cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was still important to recognise those who had made the ultimate sacrifice.

“Even though Australians this year are unable to attend services, we can safely

commemorate a different kind of service on a driveway or balcony at 6am, and with a minute of silence at 11am,” Mr Dick said.

“My late father served in World War II, and I know just how important Anzac Day was to him and all of our veterans.”

Mr Lefevre said Anzac Day was the most important day in the year for veterans.

“It’s the day that we pay our respects for those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice to safe keep our country, and it’s also the day that we say thank you.

In backing Mr Lefevre’s stand, Mr Dick said he would post Australian flags or hand-waving flags to residents in his electorate who asked to receive them.

His office has 100 Australian flags and up to500 hand waving flags to give to residents for their home services.

“The Anzac Spirit is about mateship, honour and sacrifice; it’s what unites us together in these

uncertain times,” Mr Dick said.

Mr Dick said residents could also show their support to current members of Australia’s military forces via a Message to the Troops, which can be accessed via email.

For more information or to receive their Australian flag for Anzac Day Mr Dick has requested that residents in the Oxley electorate contact his office at milton.dick.mp@aph.gov.au
