THE Dagwood Dog food trailer giving Brisbane a taste of the Ekka during COVID-19 could be in jeopardy thanks to government regulations.
Business owner Jesse McDonald set up shop on a family property at Doolandella in late May and has attracted a following of nearly 4000 people online since then.
However the business, which would usually be on its way back from shows in northern Queensland, is now on shaky grounds as they await approval for a special State Government COVID-19 temporary business licence in order to continue to trade in an area zoned by Brisbane City Council as residential.
Mr McDonald said he planned to close the 50-year-old truck — which was started by his grandfather — Monday and hoped he could re-open within a couple of days with conditional approvals.
However, if he is not given the green light, he will be forced to pack up and go.
Mr McDonald said the family were forced to stop trading when COVID-19 hit Australian shores several months ago but needed to make a living or risk losing their home.
He said the support he had been shown by customers from all over Brisbane since opening on Blunder Rd had been extraordinary.
“We’ve had great support from everyone.
“People have been fantastic.”
Customers are so thrilled with the nod to a fun day at the show that more than 1300 of them signed a Change.org petition to keep them at their current site.
Customer Tracey Retchford has lead the charge urging people to show their support.
“People from all walks of life come far and wide to attend our yearly Ekka that we can’t attend due to the COVID-19 (pandemic),” she said.
“The Dagwood Dog Guy and his workers have bought the Ekka to us with the best Dagwood dogs in town.
“Let’s share some happiness and pay it forward, let’s help save someone’s business.”
