Cyclist uses foam pool noodle to ensure motorists obey safe passing road rule

A cyclist has been seen using an unusual but effective technique to get motorists to keep their distance in Brisbane.

A cyclist has been spotted in Brisbane’s western suburbs taking matters into his own hands to ensure drivers abide by Queensland’s close passing legislation.

Alfred Botha spotted the cyclist with a yellow pool noodle strapped to the rear of his bicycle today.

He posted the photo to Facebook with the caption: “Got to hand it to the folks in Bardon. They do know their rights.”

The cyclist was spotted on the corner of Jubilee and Arthur Tce.

“The bloke was getting a bit of flack,” Mr Botha said.

But he said the cyclist didn’t seem worried by the reaction of motorists.

“He was determined to do what he wanted to do,” he said.

Under Queensland law, motorists must leave a distance of at least 1 metre when passing cyclists in a speed zone of 60km/h or less, and at least 1.5 metres where the speed limit is over 60km/h.

Bicycle Queensland chief Anne Savage said the driver should put their phone away.

“We can understand the need for protection with high rates of close passes and low rates of enforcement by the police,” she said.

“This man probably just wants to get home safely to his family.”

“All of us, as road users, need to be careful not to create risks for ourselves or others when we drive and ride.”
