MORE than 100 allegations of corrupt conduct and misconduct made against Brisbane City Council staff last financial year were serious enough to warrant formal investigations.

This included 16 that were considered to be the domain of the Crime and Corruption Commission, according to the Brisbane City Council Annual Report 2017/18.

The report states the Ethical Standards Unit received a total of 271 individual matters between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018.

“Following assessment, 16 complaints were considered to be Crime and Corruption Commission-related,” it stated.

“A further 95 matters were deemed to require formal investigation by ESU.”

The number of allegations related to the Crime and Corruption Commission are down from 48 in 2016/17 but the number of investigations by ESU increased from 55 to 95.

A council spokesman said the council did not comment on individual cases or their outcomes, and would not confirm whether any of the complaints were upheld.

“Council is unable to provide further information in addition to what already appears in the organisation’s Annual Report,” he said.

The same report reveals the council’s chief executive officer Colin Jensen assessed three complaints against city councillors about possible corrupt conduct.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said none of the complaints against councillors were upheld.

He said the council took all complaints “extremely seriously” and had processes in place for an independent review of any complaints made.

“Any complaints against staff that are substantiated are subject to appropriate disciplinary action,” he said.

A council spokesman said the Ethical Standards Unit (ESU) investigated allegations of corrupt conduct and misconduct against council employees and referred matters to the Crime and Corruption Commission “as deemed necessary”.

The Crime and Corruption Commission was contacted for comment.
