A BRISBANE businessman has listed his sprawling 10 acre home for sale – with a twist.
“Single dad of one downsizing. Seller prepared to part trade a suburban house in Brisbane or alternately an apartment or penthouse in the city,” the ad by Brisbane West Real Estate reads.
The six-bedroom ranch-style property on Gold Creek Rd has been home to Geoff Relton and his daughter Rosanna for the last nine years.
But with Rosanna preparing to go to Bond University on the Gold Coast next year, he decided to list the property for sale.
The house boasts five bathrooms, 18.5 foot ceilings, a media room (with one of the home’s two fireplaces), a four-car garage, five paddocks, six stables and dressage arenas.
“As most prospective buyers of the property have a property themselves and want to upsize, we’re going the other way. So it made sense to advertise as taking a penthouse apartment or a house in the city,” he said.
“We’ll look at anything that makes sense and that we want to do, and sooner or later it’ll come along. A nice little house in New Farm, anywhere around the city that we can lock up and go from would suit.”
Mr Relton said he had already had interest from someone who wanted to trade a 32m boat for the Brookfield home.
“We’re definitely going to buy a boat one way or another,” he said.
“We previously lived on the water at Norman Park with two boats parked out the back on moorings. Weekends were spent on the water all over the place so I’m quite happy to go back to that.”
Mr Relton said he would miss the “extraordinary” local community at Brookfield, the wildlife and the lack of traffic noise.
“Unless you’re a dyed in the wool city dweller, anyone’s going to love living here. Waking up in the morning to the birds and beautiful vistas down through the valley. You can walk into the ensuite and look at a couple of deer drinking out of a trough at the back of the house.”
Belle Property Toowong principal Robin McIllwain said part trades were more common around 40 years ago.
“The most unusual one we came across was a farmer who was happy to throw in the services of a prized bull when he was attempting to purchase a holiday unit at Sunshine Coast,” she said.
“As long as the parties are on the same page, they can be beneficial for everyone involved.”
Mr Relton has spent $500,000 alone on the grounds, and said the sale would include all the ground keeping equipment including a tractor, mowers and slashers.
The former jackaroo and paramedic - who left school at 14 and now works in transport equipment and finance - said he’d miss the property, but that the time was right for a change.
“I don’t have to sell it. I’m happy here. But with Ro living down at Bond, it’s a pretty big place on your own.”
