Brisbane’s A Mini Rescue begs community to help save 30 dogs on death row

A mass post-Christmas dumping of unwanted pets has left a Brisbane-based animal rescue group “begging” residents to donate and save 30 dogs on death row.

A Brisbane-based animal rescue group is “begging” community members to pitch in to save tens of dogs on death row amid a mass post-Christmas dumping of unwanted pets.

This time of year, as well as pre-Christmas and Easter, is typically when pounds are at their fullest and pups are most at-risk of being euthanised.

But A Mini Rescue spokeswoman said this season has brought a new level of overwhelm to local services.

The organisation is in the process of rescuing 22 dogs and eight puppies from being euthanised at various rural and remote pounds across Queensland.

A rescue this large will come at a cost of about $12,000, which A Mini Rescue is hoping local animal lovers will help them cover.

A GoFundMe campaign has raised more than $2100 for the group in two days, but there is still a long way to go. That which is not donated will be fronted by devoted rescue founder Fay Vogelzang.

“The cost of bringing all these dogs in is huge,” A Mini Rescue spokeswoman said.

“They all need transport, vet checks, vaccinations, microchips, desexing, flea and worm treating, food, and that’s just the basics.”

She said A Mini Rescue volunteers were “begging” for donations, as well as foster carers and adoptive pet parents.

“Sadly, Rescue at this time of the year is like a tsunami and as fast as we save one dog, another five appear in our inbox,” she said.

“Rangers are trying so hard, but they cannot cope, and dogs are dying every day.”

The group rescued a number of dogs last week and three yesterday, and are expecting the remainder to arrive next Wednesday and Saturday.

All 30 dogs will be kept with foster carers for the mandatory 14 days, to give volunteers adequate time to assess their health and check they are desexed.

The spokeswoman said she hoped all of the dogs would be adopted in the next four to six weeks.

“Every single rescue at the moment is feeling the pressure of how many dogs are coming in,” she said.

“There are a lot of surrenders, and we can’t always take them because we’re full with pound dogs.”

She said there had recently been a surge in the number of dogs left with pounds — they keep them for as long as possible, but space is limited.

The group is now “begging” for donations so they can continue to rescue dogs on death row. They are also on the lookout for additional foster carers and adoptive owners to lend a hand. To apply, message A Mini Rescue’s Facebook page.

The 30 dogs currently being rescued from death row will be available for adoption in a few weeks’ time.
