THE Woolloongabba Bikeway project is in the final stages with works being completed at the South East Freeway on-ramp on Stanley St.

Brisbane City Council began construction of the Woolloongabba Bikeway project in November 2018 and Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the bikeway was already 90 per cent open.

“The wheels are well and truly in motion for the highly-anticipated Woolloongabba Bikeway, which will drastically improve safety for cyclists with a 2.5km protected corridor along Annerley Rd and Stanley St,” Cr Schrinner said.

There have been more than 80 serious cyclist accidents and two deaths over the past nine years along busy Stanley St and Annerley Rd.

“The Woolloongabba Bikeway will provide permanent bike lanes along Annerley Rd and Stanley St, bolstering safety along the corridor,” Cr Scrinner said.

Council has invested $100 million over four years from 2016-2020 under the Better Bikeways 4 Brisbane program.

Cr Schrinner said the Woolloongabba Bikeway included Brisbane’s first floating bus stops and audible line markings, helping to separate motorists from the hundreds of cyclists who ride this route daily.

“Around 700 cyclists rode along Annerley Rd, while 1200 cycled along Stanley St every day when I first kicked off this project in my former role as Chair for Public and Active Transport.”

Public and Active Transport Chairwoman Krista Adams said some detours remained in place while final works were being completed near the South East Freeway on-ramp.

“Council is currently finalising construction of the bikeway near the motorway on-ramp following changes to the design at the request of the State Government,” Cr Adams said.

“Once completed, the Woolloongabba Bikeway will provide a continuous cycling corridor from the Eleanor Schonell Bridge at Gladstone Rd to the Kangaroo Point Bikeway at Dock St.”

Bicycle Queensland CEO Anne Savage commended Council’s strong commitment to cycling and active transport across Brisbane.

“There can be no doubt that the Woolloongabba Bikeway will enhance cycling uptake and increase levels of cycling, while performing an important distributive transport task within the Brisbane CBD and surrounds,” Ms Savage said.

“More than 45,000 vehicles use this transport corridor every day – providing safe, separated cycleways to keeping Brisbane moving.”
