A $25 million redevelopment of a popular Brisbane pub into a three-stage retail, food and lifestyle precinct has been delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic, with the developer revealing construction won’t begin until November next year at the earliest.
First announced in 2018, the Wecker Road Markets redevelopment at Mansfield Tavern would see the venerable watering hole, which has quenched thirsts on the southside for more than forty years and is one of Brisbane music’s hallowed turfs, make way for the new 2.1ha precinct.
According to the project page on architect Cottee Parker’s website, the three-stage project would involve the creation of new “shops, tavern, offices, food and drink outlets, health care services along with expanded pedestrian walkways, modern building design and landscape architecture treatments”.
The tavern would be relocated to Wecker Rd with large elevated north facing terraces and retail below.
Cottee Parker Architects say Wecker Road Markets would “contribute to (Mansfield’s) social capital” and put the suburb on the map as a “destination”.
The redevelopment was approved in March last year, but after 18 months of radio silence bisected by the Covid-19 pandemic, Southern Star reached out to ask what timeline was being worked to.
The developer, a Sydney-based private hotelier, said he had been “engaging potential tenants” and would “love to be shovel ready in November (2022)”.
However, there was a virus-shaped caveat – “In light of Covid-19, I’m not sure that’s a reality yet, we just don’t know yet,” he said.
Part of the delay has been due to border closures which have made Brisbane-based planning impossible.
Aside from developer Mansfield Investment Queensland Pty Ltd and Cottee Parker Architects, Place Design Group and Eastview Australia are the firms involved in the project.
