AN aspiring doctor earned a sharp rebuke in court today after he illegally transferred traffic tickets to other people, including one person who didn’t even exist.

Holland Park Magistrates Court heard that on July 15 and twice on September 17 last year, Eight Mile Plains man Shorash Nazeer Amin, 28, made false declarations to a Justice of the Peace after his car-dealer father received tickets for cars which had been sold to customers.

Defence solicitor Mitchell Cunningham told Holland Park Magistrates Court that Amin thought he was assisting his father, who spoke limited English, by first having the tickets transferred to himself, then on to the actual drivers.

However, because of Amin’s “limited investigation”, Mr Cunningham said, he incorrectly transferred the tickets to people who weren’t the drivers, including one person who apparently didn’t exist.

Mr Cunningham argued that because Amin wasn’t trying to save his licence, but rather assist his father, his culpability was lessened.

Magistrate Simon Young gave this argument short shrift though, saying Amin should have known better because of his high level of education.

The court heard Amin finished Year 12 at MacGregor State High School, had completed a Bachelor of Biomedical Science and Doctorate of Philosophy, and was now studying a Bachelor of Medicine with the hope of becoming a doctor.

Mr Cunningham argued against convictions being recorded because of his client’s professional aspirations.

Mr Young wasn’t convinced.

“Your actions go to the heart of the administration of justice,” he said.

“Our legal system depends on the honesty of those using the system.”

He indicated he was also not convinced of Amin’s stated reasons for the offences, saying there was still some “ambiguity”.

Amin pleaded guilty to three charges of making false declarations, was fined $2500 and had convictions recorded.
