Thai Rose Bar and Cafe at Woolloongabba closes

Residents of Brisbane’s inner-south have been left shocked after a restaurant which has been a fan favourite for more than 20 years served its final meal.

More tourism jobs in Queensland than before pandemic

A restaurant which has been a fan favourite in Brisbane’s inner-south for more than two years has closed its doors for the final time.

Thai Rose Bar and Cafe on Logan Rd at Woolloongabba has served its last meal as the venue entered receivership.

The restaurant, which has been part of the community since before 2000, is widely regarded and the closure has shocked fans of Thai Rose.

Rosie Brooks, a business owner from BA Creative at Woolloongabba, said the restaurant would be dearly missed after she had been eating there since 2000.

“I don’t know when the Thai Rose opened but I first visited during the Olympics in 2000, just before the Brazil v Cameroon game, the first time The Gabba was an Olympic venue maybe,” she said.

“As local business owners, we take our team out for lunch every Friday and the Thai Rose has been one of our regular favourites.

“We’ll miss Sasinan (the owner) and the great Thai food.”

Ben Hackett from Elders Commercial, who held the lease for the former site of Thai Rose, said they were looking for either boutique retailers or a restaurant and bar to fill the vacancy.

“There is a massive opportunity for a quality operator to step into a landmark site on the forefront of the Olympic precinct,” he said.

Thai Rose was also a pioneer for the dining precinct at the end of Logan Rd, which is now booming and one of the more popular food and entertainment strips across the city following the opening of more venues in recent years, including Easy Times Brewing, Mr Badgers and The One Mile.

Despite the growth in popularity at the strip at Woolloongabba, it is also one of three restaurants to close over the past 18 months after Thai Rose, The Mac From Way Back and The Pearl Cafe all shut their doors at the precinct.
