As the last age group to tip-off their season, the under-12 boys and girls regular seasons are almost complete as teams finalise preparations for the SQJBC finals and the state championships at the Northside Wizards in from September 22-25.

A total of 640 juniors have participated in the southeast Queensland competition with some impressive performances already showing the bright future ahead for basketball in the state.

As a result we have unveiled the top scorers across all divisions, which features premier league, southern cup, challenge cup and development cup from both the boys and girls competitions.

Her coach and former WNBL player, Sarah Petrie, said Grace was a great teammate who listened to her coaches and worked hard.

“Gracie is a great kid on and off the court,” she said.

“She has really improved her game and has add different facets to her game on both ends.

“I look forward to her continuing to develop her game and see where her b-ball journey takes her.

“Gracie will play a massive role in our team with our goal to win state champs.”

Grace is 21 points clear of her closest rival in Cassius Fauatea from the Ipswich Force, who has scored 203 points in the under-12 girls premier league competition.

The Ipswich star averages 22.56 points per game, while hitting 86 two-point field goals and getting to the free-throw line at a rapid rate, connecting on 31 foul shots throughout the season.

The first boys player to feature on the list is Dusty Gurney from the North Gold Coast Seahawks, who appears to be following in his father’s footsteps as a sharpshooter, connecting on four three-pointers on his way to 173 points through eight games in the premier league.

His dad, David Gurney, played this past NBL1 season with the Seahawks and is a former NBL development player.

“He absolutely loves the game. He is a real student of the game and studies the greats and tries to replicate the moves and skills that he watches then do in his own training,” David Gurney said.

“I’m not too sure he took inspiration from me but he sure offers some advice around some of my performances.

“He spent a lot of time around our NBL1 trainings and watched and leaned a lot from being around it and loved talking to the boys and felt like knew them all.”

“He is loving being part of the rep team and competing against other players from other associations and he is especially looking forward to going away at classics (state championships) with his mates.”
