As the AIC Basketball and Rugby League seasons fire up, we have revealed our top teams so far in our first power rankings as well as the top players from Round 2. SEE THE LISTS

Ashgrove win with a buzzer beater against Eddies' in 2018

Two brilliant stories came from the second week AIC Basketball and Rugby League seasons.

Third year First V player for Marist College Ashgrove Brent Humphries went for a whopping 36 points and 17 rebounds in a historic performance wearing the blue and gold jersey.

Humphries, an athletic, tall and humble achiever almost willed his Ashgrove side to victory over St Edmund’s College.

But Eddies’ were too strong in the game’s dying moments, sending it to overtime where they triumphed 72-69.

Just down the road on the McMann Oval, Eddies’ rugby league star Larry Siala was doing damage with some monstrous carries in the second half.

In the first half, Siala was driving to Ashgrove from the Gold Coast to represent his school, after running out for the Gold Coast Titans under-17 team earlier in the morning.

The dynamic rugby talent from Ipswich left at half time to make the journey up to Brisbane and do his school proud.

Marist College Ashgrove rugby league co-ordinator Ryan Apps was not only impressed by his quality of football but more impressed with his commitment to his college and team.

“If he played the full game it would’ve been a different story,” he said.

RUGBY LEAGUE POWER RANKINGS

1. IONA COLLEGE

Dominant would be the word to describe how Iona have come out of the gates this season.

After an underwhelming rugby union season Jarrod Biggs’ team have come out firing, winning their opening two games by a combined 52 points.

With the likes of Jeremy Trappett and the Hoad twins in Sully and Ayden, Iona have established themselves as the early favourites and claim top spot on our first power rankings of the season following victories over Villanova College and St Patrick’s College.

Iona’s Best and Fairest from Round 2

Ayden Hoad: Hoad had a cracker at dummy half, leading from the front. He beat multiple defenders every time he ran the ball. And as always, he was solid in defence.

Levi Hawea: Year 10 Levi Hawea played a controlled game at halfback, taking good options, and putting his body on the line. He scored a fantastic individual try late in the game to top off his performance.

Alistair Williams: Williams, who is new to rugby league, produced several strong carries in attack to get Iona on the front foot.

2. ST LAURENCE’S COLLEGE

Lauries’ also have their eyes on this year’s premiership following two convincing victories to begin the season. They are the only other undefeated team and clash with Iona this Saturday in a premiership bout.

Lauries’ Best and Fairest from Round 2

St Laurence; s College: Calum Reidy holding the ball during the rugby union season.
St Laurence; s College: Calum Reidy holding the ball during the rugby union season.

Callum Reidy: At hooker, he was a defensive machine and work horse in the middle. Padua found him hard to contain in attack, while on the other side of the ball he did not miss a tackle all day.

Lachlan Rolls: Rolls was the field general, connecting the middles to the backs. He dug into the line with off loads and tough carries to get his team on the front foot in attack.

Brodie Mclaren: Year 11 five-eighth Brodie Mclaren is getting better and better each week. Whether it is controlling the game by knowing when to run and when to pass or kick, he is becoming the mastermind of his team. One to watch.

Indeed Dragons signed Mikael Ibrahim was back in action with another double.

3. PADUA COLLEGE

Padua’s Best and Fairest from Round 2

Calef Johnson: Padua’s right centre Calef Johnson was very aggressive with his defence, while his communication was strong. He also ran some brilliant lines.

4. MARIST COLLEGE ASHGROVE

Ashgrove’s Best and Fairest from Round 2

Man of the match: Tom Weaver

Jack Andrews: One word comes to mind, effort.

Andrews chased everything down and on one occasion an Eddies’ player made a big break and he chased him 60m and tackled him down.

James Boland: Boland carried Ashgrove forward. He got his team over the advantage line and tightened up the defence.

Brodie Collins: Collins had himself a Saturday, setting up tries and scoring them too.

5. ST EDMUND’S COLLEGE

Eddies’ Best and Fairest from Round 2

Jamison Wilson: Wilson came on in the middle and really asked some questions of the Ashgrove forward pack with his footwork. He was physical in defence and the best of Ipswich on the field.

6. VILLANOVA COLLEGE- bye

7. ST PATRICK’S COLLEGE

St Patrick’s Best and Fairest from Round 2

Joshua Smith: Smith, in the back row, played well all game. He led the team with tough carries and sound defence of his channel.

Ethan Cleary: Cleary got the call up after playing well in the seconds team in previous weeks. He defended well and linked even better with the backs and will be a major improver again as he combines with Patties’ middle and spine.

Benjamin Murphy: Gun winger Ben Murphy has been consistent in the first two games. He is one of the best competitors in the team and his combination with Dean Laws at centre shut down many of Iona’s shots on their edge.

BASKETBALL POWER RANKINGS

1. VILLANOVA COLLEGE

Dominant would be the word to describe how Villa have come out of the gates this season.

They have come out firing winning their opening two games by a combined 54 points.

A fired-up Villanova was ready to meet the highly touted St Peters team in Round 2 and came away 104-73 winners on the back of a great team effort.

While Villa’s offence got going it was the defensive efforts of Doyle, Moloney and Honeyman that allowed easy transition buckets for the Wildcats, who held a 22-point lead at half time.

A thunderous dunk by Doyle in the first quarter on two St Peters defenders saw the Villa crowd erupt and the creative flair and shot making of the Villa back-court in Honeyman, Wilson, Nugus and Audet stifled any chance of a St Peters comeback in the second.

Honeyman scored 31 points, Wilson 23 and Nugus 19 while Doyle was big at both ends with 16 points and 15 rebounds.

2. ST EDMUND’S COLLEGE

Eddies’ are the only other unbeaten team in the competition but given the results in the first two rounds, every team beyond Villa is interchangeable.

With a bunch of fight and timely buckets, Eddies’ clawed their way back into the contest against Ashgrove and defeated them in what was an overtime thriller. The lead changed 18 times.

It will be interesting to see how Eddies’ fares against Villanova in Round 6 in a premiership decider – that is, if they remain undefeated.

Eddies’ have to take on St Peters next week without big man Tyson Golding, Brodie Bettiens and Josh Affleck, players so crucial for Tim Fergus’ team.

Eddies’ Best and Fairest from Round 2

Nathan May: May had another typically huge game with 27 points, 15 rebounds, and five blocks, having to play big minutes in Tyson Golding’s absence. He was a force on both ends, drawing plenty of fouls causing Ashgrove foul trouble to all of the bigs in their rotation.

Brodie Bettiens: Bettiens had a strong fourth quarter to lead the comeback when down nine with three minutes to go. He finished with 14 points and put in a strong defensive performance, but it was his maturity and confidence despite being one of the youngest players in the team that stood out most.

Josh Affleck: Affleck is another piece of his team’s young core, stepping up and making big plays to get his boys over the line.

Bettiens and Affleck are out in Round 3, playing for the Met West under-15 side at the Queensland School Sport tournament.

3. ST PETERS LUTHERAN COLLEGE

Expect an improved standing on the ladder from Orhan Mehedovski’s boys this season. Although they lost on the weekend, they came up against the premiership favourites who had an extra player in their home crowd.

Lachlain Rolison: Rolison filled up the stat sheet with 22 points and five rebounds, going 11/15 from the field. He was aggressive on offence, getting inside the paint and finishing strong.

Cooper Rowlings: Rowlings again proved why he’s one of the most dominant players in the competition, recording a double-double with 27 points and 10 rebounds.

Jai Creed, Thomas Morgan and Samuel Mansfield: These three talents steered Padua to a brilliant win. They demonstrated positive gamesmanship and persistence throughout the game when fighting all the adversity the seesawing effort threw at them.

5. ST PATRICKS COLLEGE

Geordie Murphy: Year 11 student Geordie Murphy was instrumental in St Patrick’s resurgence in the fourth quarter with many clutch buckets, steals and rebounds.

His team rallied to outscore Iona 23-10 in the final term to win the game.

6. MARIST COLLEGE ASHGROVE

The Ashgrove side played a pretty game of basketball and were minutes away from a stunning win over Eddies’.

The team from Ipswich hung in there and took advantage of the big moments to win 72-69.

Ashgrove’s Best and Fairest from Round 2

Brent Humphreys: Humphreys had a career high 36 points and left a few out there. With 17 rebounds to go along with his thirty-piece, Humphries was really impressive putting up one of the best individual performances by an Ashgrove student in recent time.

The Year 12 had his best game in blue and gold, however Eddies’ pulled away in overtime.

7. IONA COLLEGE

Iona’s Best and Fairest from Round 2

Zane MacRea: MacRea showed why he’s one of the most talented players in the competition. His well rounded game was on show with great slashes to the basket, some big three point shots and athletic finishes in transition.

Jack Van Veen: Van Veen is finding his way into the team in his first year at Iona. He is an elite shooter, who found his range game with four threes.

Gabriel Lohmann: Lohmann came in with his usual competitive hustle and hard nosed play. He gave Iona great energy and momentum which changed the flow of the game.

8. ST LAURENCE’S COLLEGE

Lauries’ will bounce back in Round 3 following a close loss at the hands of Padua.

Positions five through eight are interchangeable, with Lauries’ powerhouse squad sure to avenge their loss and get on a roll.

They are in eighth only because of such strong showings by Ashgrove and Iona.
