Shanae Louise McLellan, 28, remanded to custody at Wynnum Magistrates Court drug charges

A court was brought to a standstill as a young mother facing a host of drug supply charges made a distressed plea for her liberty at a bail hearing.

A 28-year-old mother facing 19 drug supply charges made a dramatic exit from court as she was led to remand after her bail was denied for allegedly committing further drug-related offences.

“I know I was in the wrong. I was at the wrong place at the wrong time. I was being pressured to do stuff,” a teary Shanae Louise McLellan pleaded as she was handcuffed and taken into the dock at Wynnum Magistrates Court yesterday (August 16).

“Can I go to the hospital at least?

“I am in chronic pain, my feet are hurting. It is going to be ridiculous.”

The pleas did little to sway Magistrate Zachary Sarra who deemed Carindale woman McLellan to be in a show cause position for allegedly breaching bail she committed to on June 23.

Charged with 19 counts of supplying dangerous drugs and unlawfully using a vehicle among others, the court heard the defendant accrued fresh charges in breach of her bail.

A police prosecutor said McLellan was on July 24 intercepted at the Moreton Bay Hotel by police, to whom she initially made admissions that she had allegedly driven while never having held a licence.

Police also allegedly found a licence belonging to another person in her possession and 1.7 grams of cannabis in a vehicle.

Her chances for remaining in the community were further reduced when the court heard she was on a suspended nine-month jail term for past drug offending and on an intensive drug rehabilitation order at the time.

“She is at risk of further offending and has significant (criminal) history,” a police prosecutor said.

An unrepresented McLellan said she had a medical appointment booked for chronic pain and poor circulation and would suffer should she be taken into custody.

She told the court a friend could provide a statutory declaration stating that she was merely returning the licence to someone who had lost it.

This was countered by the prosecution who stated the legitimate licence holder had been contacted and had informed police the item had been allegedly stolen from his vehicle.

According to the prosecution, the man disavowed any connection with McLellan.

A probation officer told the court the defendant had removed herself from a drug treatment program on medical grounds and had allegedly continued to abuse drugs while committing offences.

Magistrate Sarra ordered that the defendant be given access to medical treatment and remanded her to custody.

Having called for access to her lawyer as she was led away, she was assured by the magistrate the access could be organised from remand.

McLellan is scheduled to next appear before the court on September 13.
