A Brisbane university student has appeared in a Brisbane court on a charge of stalking after sending menacing videos to a young woman and showing up at her place of work.

Sebastian Matthew Kuttner-Brown, 21, of Salisbury faced the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday, March 13 and pleaded guilty to stalking a woman between March, 2021 and April, 2022.

The court heard the Griffith University student was in an online group created for people who were interested in criminology and forensic science.

He joined the group in 2021 although he studies environmental science.

Police prosecutor Laura Cook said he “menaced, intimidated, caused offence (to), and harassed” a woman in the group who also attended the Nathan campus of Griffith University.

Ms Cook said the group organised a picnic in March last year that was attended by its most active members.

Following the picnic, a profile created by Mr Kuttner-Brown named ‘WEARD’ spoke in the chat about the woman’s allergies to onions, gold, and silver as well as events which took place at the meet-up.

“If I went to one of your events and started handing out cupcakes with very finely cut white onion in them and you ate one, what do you think might happen?” WEARD wrote in the chatroom.

“I don’t go into anaphylactic shock if that’s what you mean. I can eat them,” the victim responded.

“Can you tell me where you live please, so I can prove I’m a nice guy?” WEARD asked, to which the victim said “no”.

That same month, the victim was working in the cafeteria of Griffith University when Mr Kuttner-Brown attended and asked her for a brownie.

She did not recognise Mr Kuttner-Brown but assumed he was a member of the online group as he called her by her username. She rang up the brownie and told him the price.

Mr Kuttner-Brown tried to hand over a $5 note but was advised by the victim that she could only accept card payment.

“The male has not said a word but has turned and run from the cafe,” prosecutor Ms Cook said.

That same day, Mr Kuttner-Brown asked the victim in their online chat why her manager did not allow her to accept cash and referred to her previous place of work by name.

“Leave me alone, you creep,” the woman replied.

The user then sent her two videos which “graphically” depicted torture and murder. He later posted two further offensive videos: one that showed a woman having sex with a pig and another that showed a man with his face “torn off”.

Mr Kuttner-Brown’s lawyer Rhys Foster said his client ceased offending of his own accord, had expressed a “high level” of remorse, and had insight into his offending.

He tendered character references to the court written by two of his client’s friends who spoke “highly” of him.

The court heard Mr Kuttner-Brown attended Yeronga State High School before studying business, government, and international relations at university.

He found the degree “wasn’t for him” and chose instead to study information technology and then environmental science. Throughout his university studies he has worked two part-time jobs, including at a call centre for a trampoline company and as a door-to-door salesman.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Stephen Courtney noted Mr Kuttner-Brown’s young age, early plea of guilty, and lack of a criminal history when deciding an appropriate penalty.

The 21-year-old was asked to agree to complete 80 hours of community service in the next six months, to which he said he would, and a restraining order was made banning any contact with his victim.

No conviction was recorded.
