BRISBANE City Councillor Kim Marx has alleviated concerns the redevelopment of Market Square, Sunnybank, would endanger the habitat of roosting lorikeets.

Long time southside resident Ross Hanson said he feared developers of Market Square, ADCO, would fell trees along Mains Rd.

These trees are used by hundreds of rainbow lorikeets to roost during mornings and at night.

Mr Hanson, who had lived in the area for 23 years, said the sound of screeching lorikeets was a welcome feature of the Sunnybank shopping precinct.

However, Cr Marx said while some of the trees would be removed to accommodate the Market Square redevelopment, this would not take place until mature native trees suitable for lorikeets had been replanted metres from the existing tree locations.

Cr Marx said the developers would be using an area near the trees as storage for the duration of the development project.

“They will then plant mature trees back from the road,’’ Cr Marx said.

“There will also be new footpaths and landscaping on that corner (McCullough St and Mains Rd) and then those trees will be removed after that.

“But only after the birds have new trees.

“The new trees will be like the ones there at the moment and birds can move in straight away.

“It is a good outcome.

“And the construction company is paying for all that.’’

Cr Marx said ADCO had paid council a bond as a commitment to look after the trees until new natives were planted in their place.

She said the Market Square redevelopment was expected to start soon.
